Fishing and fortitude on Bayou Petit Caillou
In 1875, French pioneer Albert Eloie Chauvin opened a general store on Bayou Petit Caillou in Terrebonne Parish. The business developed into a processing and canning facility for local seafood, an industry that continues to define the community that's now home to 2,500 residents. “Chauvin represents something that is becoming more and more rare in Louisiana: a traditional fishing community, still populated with fishing families,” says Gary LaFleur, coordinator for Chauvin Sculpture Garden, an outdoor art gallery. “In other coastal communities, one big company owns all the shrimp boats. In Chauvin, it’s still connected to families.” Chauvin Brothers — the store where it all began — now sells hardware and lumber and stands as the oldest retail business in Terrebonne Parish.
Chauvin residents tend to have smaller homes with large properties.

Rebuilding the Parish Recreation area
Until Hurricane Ida tore through the region in 2021, the Parish Recreation area on Angel Street was a central gathering place. The storm demolished the rec building and nearby swimming pool, prompting the town to rebuild. “It was a heartbreak,” says Belinda “Bea” Prosperie, executive director for Terrebonne Parish Recreation District 7. “That place came a long way. I had a lot of good memories there as a child and as an adult. But it’s exciting knowing that they’re shooting for something new.” Plans are underway for a new recreational facility on the corner of Klondyke Road and Bayouside Drive. A fishing pier will offer bayou access, and the recreation district is waiting on equipment for a splash pad. In the meantime, the Little Caillou Ballpark and adjacent playground can still be found behind the fire station on Recreation Court. Artist Kenny Hill created the Chauvin Sculpture Garden and its? Christian-themed collection of over 100 pieces while living in a tiny rustic home on Bayouside Drive. After improving the site, the Kohler Foundation donated the artwork to Nicholls State University in 2000. “People visit the site because it’s a one-of-a-kind, visionary folk-art environment,” LaFleur says. “It’s not just a collection of sculptures; it’s really one big masterpiece that’s all connected.”
The Chauvin sculpture garden is one of few parks in town.

Chauvin Boat Blessing
The local Catholic community adheres to the bayou tradition of Boat Blessings, when priests bless the fishing boats every spring before shrimp season. “People are so connected to the environment that every year, they have a blessing of the fleet,” LaFleur says. “On that day, we invite people to gather at the Garden because it’s a great place to watch the ritual.”
Stilt houses and batture property
Water is everywhere in Chauvin, and the housing landscape reflects this reality. Some real estate qualifies as “batture property,” a term for land situated between a river's low-water stage and a levee. Cottages with wraparound porches rise alongside the bayou on stilts, and mobile homes sit propped on cinderblocks or raised concrete beds. Some ranch-style homes and bungalows are built at ground level, especially on the small webs of residential streets branching away from Little Caillou Road, the primary thoroughfare. Batture lots with waterfront access and no existing structures might cost $25,000 to $200,000, while mobile and ranch-style homes sell for $100,000 to $200,000 on average. A stilt house with an accompanying boat slip might cost $150,000 to $300,000. Farther south toward Cocodrie, the fishing village known as “Sportsman’s Paradise,” similar homes are priced slightly higher, typically between $400,000 and $750,000.
Stilt homes are the most common housing style in Chauvin to protect homes from flooding.
Many Chauvin residents choose to live in RV's, a sound decision when hurricanes are a threat.

Little Caillou Road to State Highway 56
Little Caillou Road follows the path of the bayou and transforms into Louisiana State Highway 56 during the 17-mile journey north to Houma, where residents find more restaurant and retail options as well as Terrebonne General Health System, the nearest hospital. Following the highway straight through Houma leads to U.S. Route 90, the best route to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, about 60 miles away.
Hurricane risk in the Bayou Region
Chauvin suffered extensive damage when Hurricane Ida struck in 2021. While the resilient community is doing its best to build back, threats of hurricanes and flooding are always on the horizon in this part of Louisiana. Buyers may also note that the CAP Index gives Chauvin a crime score well below the national average.
