Serene suburban houses in a rural setting
Big homes on large lots paint the picture of the Hitchinpost neighborhood, a Chelmsford suburb whose combination of suburban and rural features is highly regarded. The neighborhood's small farms heighten the rural atmosphere, where barn-shaped roofs on homes add to its serene nature. The neighborhood is almost entirely comprised of houses, with many large lawns hidden under the shade of towering maple and pine trees. “It is a really quiet and walkable area, just a feel-good kind of neighborhood with friendly faces all around,” says Rachel Amato, a Realtor with Century 21 Your Way who has lived in the neighboring Westford area for over 27 years. Even with tranquil streets, downtown Chelmsford’s shopping, dining and schools are less than 4 miles from home.

Older gambrels to match a rural community
Many of Hitchinpost’s homes date back to the mid-20th century, with well-kept Colonial Revivals and gambrels common to that era dotting the streets. “Most of the homes in the area were made by the same builder,” Amato says. “It is in a popular style, and everyone really likes them; they’re really pretty and homey.” Many homes are situated farther from the street on lots averaging about an acre. Here residents have space for privacy but are close enough to stop and chat with neighbors. Prices commonly range from $550,000 to around $850,000, with some larger Colonial Revivals going up to $1.4 million. The neighborhood also has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, much lower than the national average of 4 out of 10.

Roberts Field and Friendship Park
The 20-acre Roberts Field is the only park in the area, but it offers plenty of options and is a well used weekend spot. The field is a hit with local families and “is popular for both soccer and baseball games,” Amato says. It also contains Friendship Park, a fenced-in playground that was recently renovated in 2018. The facility now features a pair of zip lines, a climbing net, slides and a jungle gym. Those seeking a hiking spot can head to the nearby Lime Kiln Quarry on the neighborhood's southern end for roughly 64 acres of hiking trails surrounded by regional plants.

Next door soft serve and downtown dining
While Hitchinpost is primarily a residential neighborhood, shopping and dining options are never too far away. Country Creamery and Coffeehouse, right alongside Roberts Field, is a snack spot often visited after Little League games for hot and cold drinks and soft-serve ice cream. Those looking for sit-down dining options can head to downtown Chelmsford to local spots like Fishbones, which opened in 2006. Its famous lobster rolls and clam chowder make it a common choice for seafood lovers. Those looking for an after-work drink can stop by Navigation Brewing Company. This local Lowell brewery opened its second location in downtown Chelmsford and serves IPAs and milk stouts. Grocery options include the Stop & Shop at Chelmsford Mall and Market Basket, about 4 miles away.

Chelmsford public schools and arts programs
Students can start their education at Byam Elementary School, which receives an A-minus rating on Niche. They can then continue to Parker Middle School, which also scores an A-minus, and finish at the A-rated Chelmsford High School. The high school is well known for its athletics programs, and local teams have a fierce rivalry with Billerica to the east. Competition reaches its peak at the annual Thanksgiving football game. The middle and high school are just a short trip away from the neighborhood, allowing for quick drop-offs and pick-ups for parents.

Interstate 495 runs past the south end of the area, so residents can access the freeway in a matter of minutes. Route 3 allows for a drive into Boston. 4th of July Parades and farmers markets
The town center, less than 3 miles from Hitchinpost, serves as the finish line for one of Chelmsford’s biggest traditions, its Fourth of July parade. The event is among Massachusetts' largest Fourth of July parades, and Amato says residents end up staking out their spots the day before. The Chelmsford Farmers Market, known as Chelmsford Market on the Common, is another popular event in town. It allows residents to get fresh and local ingredients every Saturday morning from the end of May to mid-October.
There's plenty to do like farmer's markets and sight-seeing around the town.
