Quiet rural community with deep roots
Lima Township is an off-the-beaten-path community tucked into the farmlands west of Ann Arbor. The township has over 40 miles of unpaved roads, and locals may drive for miles without passing a single residence. Thickets of trees and dense foliage line the streets, while many houses are hidden at the end of long driveways. Established in 1834, the township has deep farming roots and today comprises operating farms and undeveloped grassy spaces. "There are several newer homes in the area, but you'll also find a lot of older farmhouses on bigger properties," says Realtor Glenda Gerbstadt of Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel. The township is close to nearby cities and zoned for two highly rated school districts.

Parks offer bird-watching, hiking and canoeing
The rural township has abundant outdoor spaces for hiking, fishing and hunting. Trinkle Marsh Preserve at Easton Farms is a 150-acre wetland complex featuring wildlife and a small, unpaved trail. Locals can stroll the preserve's two boardwalks, stopping at the overlook that meets the water's edge. The green space is a home for herons, shorebirds and cranes. The 70-acre Baker Woods Preserve has the Chelsea District Library's Storybook Trail; the short path displays children's stories that change every season. Residents hunt waterfowl and fish at the Chelsea State Game Area to the north. The county's Border To Border Trail stretches through the region, leading hikers and bicyclists to Ann Arbor to the east and Chelsea to the west. Dexter–Huron Metropark, about 7 miles away, offers picnic areas as well as boating and fishing along the Huron River.

Expansive homes with lots of land
Lima Township's streets weave around expansive corn fields, often traveled by tractors headed to a nearby farm. Prospective buyers will find sprawling split-levels and ranch styles from the mid-20th century on at least an acre of land. Several contemporary colonials fill the 21st-century developments, Thornton Farms and Island Hills Estates. These properties range in price from $350,000 to $625,000. Outside the developments are traditional farmhouses, custom homes and modern colonials with property sizes between 2 and 80 acres. Larger estates are often used for farming and recreational hunting. Residences outside of the planned subdivisions range from $400,000 to $1.5 million, depending on square footage and acreage. Lima Township has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, much lower than the national average of 4.

Locals have access to I-94
Lima is a car-dependent community without access to public transportation; however, Highway 94 cuts through the community, bringing travelers 14 miles east to Downtown Ann Arbor. Commuters heading north or south can hop on Highway 52. Chelsea Hospital is the nearest medical facility, and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is about a 40-mile drive away.
Locals grab fresh produce from local farms and markets
Locals have access to fresh products from nearby farms. Jacob's Fresh Farm is known for its produce, raw honey and flowers. Stiver's Restaurant, which resembles an updated barn from the outside, is a casual eatery featuring an All-American menu. Residents travel about 5 miles from home for more dining and groceries. To the west, in Chelsea, there are restaurant options like Smokehouse 52 BBQ, Cleary's Pub and Chelsea Bakery. The nearby city, Dexter, is another dining destination. The Mindo Chocolate Maker kitchen factory is in Lima Town, while its brick-and-mortar storefront is 20 minutes away in Downtown Ann Arbor. The business produces treats using a rare form of chocolate. Tours and classes are held at the factory. Nearby supermarkets include Meijer on Jackson Road and Polly's County Market in Chelsea.
