Suburban living close to the state line
West Chevy Chase Heights, located near the state line between Maryland and Washington, D.C., features an eclectic mix of housing varieties, a close-knit community and highly-rated schools. Though few local outlets, be it for shopping, dining or entertainment, are in the area, downtown Bethesda isn’t very far away and plenty of local landmarks define West Chevy Chase Heights’ topography. “It’s very convenient to downtown Bethesda,” says Dana Rice, an executive vice president with Compass Realty and the founder of the Dana Rice Group. “Bethesda Chevy Chase High School is an anchor to the vicinity, and Lynbrook Park is a huge benefit to the residents since they can walk down to it. People love the East Bethesda area because it’s not cookie-cutter and has a variety of housing types and styles.”

A large selection of architectural styles
Walks down West Chevy Chase Heights’ shaded streets reveal a wide variety of home styles. “It was developed in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s,” Rice says. “It’s quite eclectic, from little bungalows to giant new constructions. There’s also older Cape Cods and bungalows, too, and prices can range from around $800,000 up to $3 million.” Craftsman styles are also found here, and some of the houses line the edge of the Columbia Country Club. Foliage like heirloom plants, crepe myrtles or weeping willows draped over the lawns add a vibrancy of nature to the neighborhood. Inviting porches and colorful touches, like a red door up the porch steps or blue shutters framing a set of windows, are among West Chevy Chase Heights’ display of personal flair on properties.

Hitting the links, trails and green spaces
Though the private Columbia Country Club, around since the early 20th century and counting several presidents among its former members, takes up nearly half the neighborhood, West Chevy Chase Heights has plenty of recreational opportunities for residents. Lynnbrook Local Park is close to the neighborhood’s center, offering its visitors nearly six acres with a playground, tennis courts, athletic fields and rentable recreation building. Just outside the neighborhood boundary is the trailhead to the Capital Crescent Trail, which follows an abandoned portion of the B&O Railroad and stretches for more than 12 miles from Washington, D.C. into Maryland. There’s also access to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, a nearly-six-mile-long path alternating between a former railroad route, streets, sidewalks and paths.

Within walking distance of downtown
“It’s truly walkable to downtown Bethesda, which is a core shopping and employment district,” Rice says. That downtown area is where West Chevy Chase Heights residents will find outlets to fulfill their shopping and dining needs, as the residential neighborhood itself has few commercial and retail opportunities. A Harris Teeter on Wisconsin Avenue, complete with a Starbucks and in-store deli, is just up the road from a pair of Trader Joe’s storefronts. An Amazon Fresh store adds to the grocery availability for the area, while specific eats can be found at an Einstein Bros. Bagels. Alongside an expansive menu, Bethesda Jazz and Blues Supper Club also hosts live music in the art deco-style Bethesda Theatre.

Transportation via road and rail
Residents will have rail-based transportation in the area in the near future. “The Purple Line is opening soon for aboveground transit,” Rice says. “It’s a big deal and cuts through the neighborhood, but creates convenience for everyone there, and the Metro is right there as well. It’s convenient to the National Institutes of Health and Walter Reed.” As for motorists, Route 410 runs along part of the neighborhood’s western side, reaches as far as Silver Spring and Hyattsville, and is known as the East-West Highway. Route 355 runs as far north as Frederick and terminates at the state line, while to the east Connecticut Avenue spans both southern Maryland and Washington, D.C.’s north side.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
