A diverse and vibrant community on Chicago's southwest side
A major piece of Chicago Lawn’s history is commemorated at Marquette Park, the large recreational area just south of the neighborhood: a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose advocacy for civil rights brought him to the community in 1966. Dr. King’s protest was met with resistance from some residents, but was an important milestone in the neighborhood, which would diversify and develop a resilient spirit as it matured through high and low periods.
Today, a dedicated population of mostly Hispanic, Latino and Black residents is driving the future of the working-class neighborhood, reflected by successes like an acclaimed Belizean restaurant featured on the Food Network and city-backed outreach programs. While the community continues to navigate challenges, it’s an area with a shared resolve all its own. “There’s a strong sense of character here. In general, everyone’s pretty friendly and helpful,” says David Hernandez, a broker with the Hernandez Chicago Group at Coldwell Banker. Hernandez has sold homes in Chicago Lawn and the southwest end of the city for more than 18 years.
Varied outdoor and indoor recreation at Marquette Park
Chicago Lawn’s marquee outdoor destination is Marquette Park. Occupying more than 300 acres just south of the neighborhood, the park offers varied activities to grant guests an escape from busy city life. Folks can contribute to the community garden, play fetch and football on the grass and turf fields or get a basketball game going in one of the two gymnasiums. The Marquette Park Golf Course tucks a nine-hole layout into the center of the area, surrounded by the fishing-friendly waters of the park’s lagoon. Guests can also stop by the Martin Luther King Jr. Living Memorial, which depicts Dr. King’s march through the area to advocate for housing reform.
Residents looking for a smaller outdoor retreat can find it at Senka Park. Situated northwest of the neighborhood, there’s a playground here along with ball fields and walking trails for simple outings. For enrichment of the mind, the Chicago Public Library Chicago Lawn Branch sits at the corner of Kedzie Avenue and 61st Place. The library offers varied programs in English and Spanish.
Chicago Lawn’s varied population has contributed to a host of religious traditions in the area. Houses of worship nearby include the Chicago Islamic Center, the Chicago Lawn United Methodist Church, the Beth Shalom B'nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation and St. Rita of Cascia Parish. Many of the area’s houses of worship are part of the Southwest Organizing Project, a community-driven organization dedicated to building solidarity between locals through common goals.

Larger chain supermarkets like Aldi and Pete's Fresh Market are also available along the surrounding city blocks. Walgreens and Dollar General are close stops for other essentials. A steadfast horse statue greets visitors at the door to Tony’s Western Wear. Inside, racks of workwear and shelves with cowboy hats and boots go from the floor to the ceiling. Wigs, hair care products and cosmetics are common purchases from Quality Beauty Supply. A few blocks south of the neighborhood, Village Discount Outlet offers gently used clothing and household goods. CDs, light sticks and photo cards line the shelves at K POP & More, a store specializing in merchandise for Korean bands and soloists.
Locals can find several options for Mexican and Latin American fare in the neighborhood. Paintings of Emiliano Zapata and Frida Kahlo hang alongside a TV tuned to the latest soccer matches at Carmelo’s Taco Place. Beyond the namesake tacos, guests can also stop by for tortas, burritos and margaritas. Garifuna Flava is one of a select few restaurants in the Chicago area specializing in Belizean food, and one of the city’s most celebrated choices for jerk chicken, oxtail and king fish. The neighborhood favorite was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2011. Nicky’s The Real McCoy is one of many Chicago diners sharing the name, and offers a classic menu with Italian beefs, gyros and rib tips. Tony’s Chinese Food offers plenty of take-out standbys like orange chicken and Mongolian beef, but guests can also pick up Korean dishes like bibimbap and seafood stew. “You’ve also just got to keep an eye out because sometimes there’ll be a food stand posted up and it’ll have a line all around the block,” Hernandez says.
Taqueria Mi Barrio has delicious carne asada tacos and burritos.
