A Chicago neighborhood with many names
While the original intent in the 1970s was to make the neighborhood where the West Argyle Street Historic District is north of Chicago exclusively a Chinatown area, it morphed into Little Vietnam, also known as Little Saigon and Asia on Argyle. While there are primarily Vietnamese restaurants and businesses here, there are also Laotian, Cambodian, Japanese and Chinese. “This is a culturally diverse area,” says Wendy Lee, a real estate agent with Exit Realty at Home. Argyle Street, between Broadway and Sheridan, is where that diversity is fully displayed. It's also the site of the annual Lunar New Year Parade, held every February.

Not just Vietnamese cuisine in Little Vietnam
Walking along Argyle Street is like taking a tour of Asian countries and their food. Pho 777 specializes in the Vietnamese soup dish served with rice noodles. The meat is separate from the broth, which is not typical of Pho restaurants. La Patisserie P is a bakery with Asian favorites like barbecue pork buns and classic French croissants. First Sip Café décor includes teacups hanging from the ceiling and various teas and coffees, including Vietnamese roasts known to be strong. With the amount of restaurants, and the variety of flavors, it makes sense that some stand out. “One of the best Mexican restaurants is in this neighborhood,” says Santiago Valdez, a broker with Compass with over 20 years of real estate experience. “Kie-Gol-Lanee is not a very big place, but if you’re coming to Chicago, you have to try it.” They are known for Oaxacan food and their tamales. There are various neighborhood grocery stores along Argyle Street, while Mariano's is at the corner of Foster and Sheridan.

Great walkability as compared to Andersonville
About 80% of those living in Little Vietnam are renters, with condos rather than single-family homes. Condos can range from $125,000 to $800,000, with some renovated units over 100 years old. Some of the condos are built with classic Chicago Greystone architecture. Monthly fees run from $200 to $400 for maintenance-free living. Single-family homes start at $900,000 and go up to $1.2 million, with turn-of-the-century Victorians with bay windows and up to 3,000 square feet. “People are drawn to this area because it’s less expensive than nearby areas like Andersonville, and it's more walkable,” Valdez says. In the residential area, there are narrow streets, sidewalks on either side of the street and homes built close to one another.
Little Vietnam's overall CAP crime index score is 5, slightly above the national average. The highest score is for robbery, which gets a 7. Because of Lake Michigan's proximity and the issue of lakeshore erosion, the neighborhood also has a heightened risk of flooding after heavy rains.

Close to Lake Michigan
Traveling east on Foster Avenue, about a mile from Little Vietnam, is the shore of Lake Michigan. A parking lot is close to a trail leading south to Montrose Beach, the largest beach in Chicago and one of the few places where non-motorized boats can be launched. The north part of the beach is a designated dog section where canines frolic in the sand and splash in the water. Buttercup Park includes a mini splash pad and a playground with a soft-surface area accessible for kids in wheelchairs. The park also has a free library where people can take or leave a book.
The Montrose Dog beach is open year round where residents can let pups off leash.

CTA Red Line goes by Little Vietnam
The Argyle station of the Red Line CTA elevated train is being renovated, so there’s a temporary station that’s active with entrances on the south side of Foster Avenue and the north side of Winona Street. The remodeled station is anticipated to open in 2025. A banner on the L train overpass on Argyle that says “Asia on Argyle” was taken down while station renovations occur. The sign is also expected to return once work is done. It will take commuters about 35 minutes to get from the station to downtown Chicago. There are also numerous CTA bus stops on major roads like Broadway and Foster Avenue.

While the Argyle station is under construction a temporary CTA Red Line stop is available.
