North Lawndale seeing revitalization

The city of Chicago is dedicating millions of dollars to breathe new life into North Lawndale, a resilient community that played a vital role in the Civil Rights movement and the passage of the Fair Housing Act. “It’s an evolving community, with a lot of growth happening in the area through new construction, new businesses and renovations,” says Tatianna Barnett, a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Realty. “Everyone who lives in the community is looking forward to seeing a better, more improved neighborhood.”

Greystones pack the streets

North Lawndale is home to the highest concentration of greystones in the city, with many featuring cornices and spires. Though the early 20th-century homes dominate the area, other options include brick two-flats and A-frame bungalows. Houses with small uniformly square yards are often surrounded by metal or chain link fencing. Price points start around $90,000 for a house needing an overhaul. “It’s a great investment area for buyers,” Barnett says. “The homes are competitively priced compared to other neighborhoods because it’s a growing, improving area.” Most single-family homes sell for $150,000 to $315,000, though multi-family homes with six to seven bedrooms can climb to $800,000.

Easy access to the Metra and the L

Heading into downtown Chicago is made simple by hopping on the Metra Green Line at the Western Avenue station or one of several Pink Line stops on the L. Chicago Transit Authority bus stops are also dotted along 16th Street and Central Park Avenue. Locals driving to the city center take Interstate 290 for nearly 6 miles. Due to North Lawndale’s proximity to the Medical District, Barnett says it’s appealing to professionals who “want to save a little money and be close to work.” The medical district is home to Rush University Medical Center and sits within 4 miles of the neighborhood. The city is working to employ more community members at The Fillmore Center, which will be housed in a vacant building along West Fillmore Street. Fillmore Linen Service is the first business hoping to fill the space, which could bring more than 175 jobs to North Lawndale.

Vibrant local eateries with more to come

Familiar chain stores anchor a small shopping center along West Cermak Road. Just outside the neighborhood’s southwestern corner is an ALDI and Cermak Fresh Market for grocery staples. Foot Locker, Burlington and a Dollar Tree sit within the complex that also houses AMC Cicero 14 for movie nights. To get a feel for North Lawndale’s culinary scene, pay a visit to Soule, a vibrant eatery serving everything from fried salmon jerk pasta to lamb chops. Stop by La Antigua for authentic Mexican cuisine. Plans are in the works to bring more restaurants to the neighborhood through a project called Lawndale Redefined. The multimillion-dollar development will feature an outdoor courtyard edged by an apartment building, small grocery store and two restaurants, one of which will feature a rooftop terrace.

Neighbors tend to community garden

A once-isolated property just off Old Route 66 is now in full bloom. The Lawndale Triangle Garden was created through efforts made by community leaders, the city and a local nonprofit. Today, neighbors gather in the garden to grow, harvest and share seasonal produce. Between the greystones lining Douglass Boulevard is Independence Square, an outdoor hotspot where people go for walks along paved pathways or relax under the shade of mature maple and elm trees. “In the summer, you’ll see families and friends gathering for barbecues and group picnics on the square,” says Homero Garza, a real estate agent with Charles Rutenberg Realty of IL. Walking east along the trails of Independence Square leads to the more expansive green space of Douglass Park, a popular spot among families because of its three newly renovated playgrounds. Locals can also test their golf skills on the small putting green or take a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool during the summer months. Tennis and basketball courts, a football stadium and a soccer field offer more outdoor recreation.
