Living, shopping and dining on Chicago's North Side
Densely populated, with a thorough mixture of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, the neighborhood of Southport Corridor has developed into a tight community within the larger realm of Chicago’s North Side. “I’ve met a lot of good people in the neighborhood over the years, from school, and friends of my kids,” says Rob Munds, a Realtor with Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty who has lived in a townhouse in the neighborhood for two decades. “It’s easy to get together with people on the spur of the moment in the neighborhood.” Roughly six miles from downtown Chicago and two miles from the shores of Lake Michigan, it maintains the idea of ‘close yet far’ that makes many of the neighborhoods in the North popular amongst those looking for something a little quieter than downtown living, but livelier than the suburbs.
Specialty shops, live music and local eateries
Along Southport Avenue and surrounding the intersection of Lincoln and Belmont, a lively shopping district has developed, mixing national retailers and local boutiques amongst coffee shops, pizzerias and taco spots. The diversity of Southport is represented in the dining options, from Las Tablas on Lincoln’s Colombian dishes to the French cuisine at Dear Margaret and traditional Georgian fare at the Chicago Diplomat Café. The Little Goat, from Top Chef’s Stephanie Izard, anchors the dining along Southport Avenue, which also includes the colorful Tuco and Blondie and Coda di Volpe, a chic Southern Italian trattoria. Schubas Tavern features a lineup of live music in an old Schlitz brewery, and is paired with Tied House, a restaurant serving everything from burgers to grilled acorn squash. Specialty shops include the Chicago Music Exchange, thrift store The Brown Elephant, and Aura Candle Bar. Spots to pick up supplies for home cooking include Jewel-Osco, Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's and Paulina Market, a locally-owned neighborhood butcher.

Greystones, brick builds and condos
“There’s a mix, a lot of new construction, but then there’s the old traditional two-flats, three-flats, a lot of those in the neighborhood, with small landlords,” says Munds. “There are townhome complexes and single-family homes. Pricing varies quite a bit; you can get a one-bedroom condo for 250,000 to 300,000, but then there’s a 2-bed 2-bath for 510,000, then there’s new construction condos for 1.2 million.” Homeowners association monthly fees for condos typically range from $215 to $300 but can go over $900. Single-family homes include greystones and brick builds that can go for as low as $750,000, along with a handful of homes built in the 2000s on oversized lots that can reach $3.5 million. Vintage and modern mid- and high-rises offer both apartments and condominiums. Vintage architecture has been getting more attention lately, says Mary McIntire Petri, a broker with EXIT Strategy Realty, "They like to update and remodel the interiors." Both realtors note a high level of interest in the neighborhood, and the numbers back it up – homes in the community sell on average after only 16 days on the market, just a third of the time of the national average of 44 days on the market.
Southport Corridor features a variety of newer and older homes.

Holiday festivities and Chicago Pride
Munds says every neighborhood puts on events throughout the year, and there’s plenty to do within Southport and nearby. “There are tons of block parties, residents will close off the streets, you register with the alderman, they’ll post signs on the street so everyone moves their cars off. We just had one on Greenview, there was a DJ, a magician, silly string fights, popcorn and pizza. For three days, it was a festival just for that little neighborhood.” Locals get involved – Munds himself did a shift selling food tickets. He also highlights themed weekends in the area – “There was a Taco Fest last weekend with stages and bands, there was a rib fest over on Lincoln Avenue, there’s a Roscoe Village burger one, every weekend there’s a festival.” Themed events throughout the year include the Southport Art Fest in summer, while the fall is lively with St. Alphonsus Church OktoberFest, Trick or Treat on Southport, the Music Box Theatre's Thanksgiving weekend sing-a-long, and the Southport Holiday Stroll and Cocktail Crawl being highlights.
Public and private option in Southport Corridor
“The school right here is a really good draw, it’s a popular grade school, it’s one of the reasons people want to be in the neighborhood,” says Munds, a father of three himself. Most students in the neighborhood will attend Hamilton Elementary or Burley School, while those in the far north will head to Blaine Elementary – all three earn an A-minus from Niche. Those who stay within their zone will head to Lake View High School, which is graded B-minus and recently underwent a $27-million renovation in 2018, adding an innovation lab and a turf athletic field. Those in the far south of the neighborhood will attend Prescott Magnet Cluster School, graded an A-minus, before heading to Lincoln Park High School, which earns an A grade and was named the #1 Standout High School in Illinois by Niche.
Options outside the standard school pipeline include magnet schools for specific concentrations like STEM, the International Baccalaureate program or music. Selective enrollment schools are highly competitive college prep public schools that require testing even to be considered for enrollment – the nearest to Southport is Lane Tech College Prep High School to the west of the neighborhood, which Niche rates as an A-plus school. Private and parochial schools are also available – “DePaul College Prep used to be a boys school, but they rebranded and it’s getting harder to get into,” says Munds of the nearest Catholic high school.

Neighborhood parks and Belmont Harbor
Wang Park, named for Chi Che Wang, a scientist and professor who founded the Chicago Chinese Women's Club, provides a playground and green space within the neighborhood. Hamlin Park is nearby for a broader range of activities, with tennis courts, four ball fields, a pool and the Hamlin Park Fieldhouse for indoor play and classes. The Lake View YMCA offers options in Chicago’s bristling winters. While Lake Michigan is roughly 2 miles east, it’s a massive draw for residents, with beaches, harbors for boats, fishing, fields and much more. “There’s a ledge, concrete steps where there’s not a beach, it’s a spot for people to hang out. High school kids will hang out there, find a place to plop down and socialize, go swimming,” says Munds. “Last year, there was this impromptu thing, Friday Swim Club, it was just a group of people going out there and swimming on Friday mornings. You’d see people on their bikes with little floaties around their waist, riding through the neighborhood going to the lake.” A dedicated dog beach provides families with pets a dedicated spot to enjoy the water, while other sites with water views include a golf course and the Chicago Yacht Club. A lakeside memorial park, the AIDS Garden Chicago, focuses on the impact of AIDS and HIV.

Getting around via Chicago Transit Authority
Residents mix and match transportation options, and while many have a car, they can also make do without. The neighborhood is a paradise for walkers and bikers, while rental electric scooters and Divvy Bike stands can be found on select street corners. Public transportation options include Chicago Transit Authority buses. At the same time, the Southport, Irving Park and Paulina stations provide access to the Brown Line of the L. Metra light rail provides transport to the suburbs, with Ravenswood being the nearest station. To get beyond the suburbs, Chicago O’Hare International Airport is roughly 13 miles northwest. This is generally a drive of 30 minutes via Interstate 90, the closest major route; however, at peak times this can take from 40 minutes up to an hour. Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, which provides 24-hour emergency care and specialty medical services, is roughly a mile from Southport.
Residents can take the L at Southport station to be downtown in 25 minutes.

Catch a game at Wrigley Field or a show at the historic Music Box
It’s only a mile from the center of the Southport Corridor to Wrigley Field, making games and concerts there a popular activity. “I went last night with the guy sitting out there,” says Munds, referring to a neighborhood acquaintance he stopped to chat with. “We walked over. It’s easy; they’ll close the traffic around the ballpark for before and after the game.” For those more interested in performance than sports, the Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture community theater offers classes and various performances. The Depression-era Music Box Theatre draws in cinema fans from across the city, specializing in independent, foreign, cult and classic films.
