Country living just beyond the Chattanooga city lights
Sprawling between Chickamauga and LaFayette, Pond Spring is a scenic, rural neighborhood characterized by winding country roads and secluded farmhouses. “I think it's just so peaceful out here; it's generally very quiet, and everybody minds their own business,” says Rachael Wiley, assistant manager at JK's Country Store, the only retailer in the neighborhood. “But everyone is really kind and willing to help. There’s that sense of community.” As can be imagined, outdoor recreation is big here. Cloudland Canyon State Park is nearby, offering hiking, fishing and camping— all activities Wiley names when asked what people do for fun. Though this neighborhood may seem isolated, it's only about 17 miles south of downtown Chattanooga. “I love the idea of a homestead. I like that I can get that here but still be 30 minutes from downtown Chattanooga,” says Wiley.
Winding country roads dotted with farmhouses
This isn’t a place full of sprawling subdivisions or grid-patterned streets, but rather a rural landscape dotted with homes on rolling acres with the mountain range as a backdrop. Residential building picked up in the late 20th century, with ranch-style homes, bungalows and farmhouses with grazing animals being a common sight. New construction has also brought large New Traditional homes to Pond Spring. Prices typically range from $100,000 to $350,000. Acreage also plays a considerable part in price, though the perk of the area is that many homes typically have a half-acre or acre to start. Homes with 5 acres or more range from $480,00 to $710,000.
Hiking, biking and camping at Cloudland Canyon State Park
Cloudland Canyon State Park spans about 5 square miles along the western edge of Lookout Mountain. A deep gorge forms its iconic canyons, while its miles of trails weave through dense woodlands that lead to cliff outlooks, caves and cascading waterfalls. The park offers fishing ponds, a disc golf course, horseback riding, mountain biking and camping along its rugged natural landscape. Within Pond Spring is the James A. Smith Planetarium, one of the last planetariums in the U.S. to be administered by a public school system. While they have several educational programs, they are also open to the public. There's a 40 foot dome for its projector displays, and the Helen Solomon Geology Exhibit showcases an extensive array of fossils, crystals and artifacts. The planetarium is open generally during the school year.
Old-fashioned pizzerias and casual barbeque joints
Chickamauga and LaFayette border Pond Spring to the north and south, providing nearby shopping and dining. LaFayette has several big-name stops, such as Walmart and Food City, right off the main thoroughfare that connects it to Pond Spring. The Crushed Tomato is a family-run pizzeria with an old-fashioned vibe. Manager and daughter of the owners’ Natalie Burdick, explains how her parent's love for travel led to the inception of the popular restaurant. “One of their favorite places to go was New York, and they loved the brick oven pizza,” says Burdick. “A lot of people around here had never even seen a wood-fired pizzeria, so they brought it here.” The red brick interior, hardwood floors and colorful stained-glass windows create a comfy yet rustic feel to the over 110-year-old building that still contains the ghosts of businesses past. “A lot of the history is still here,” says Burdick. “It was a Ford dealership at one time, and it still has the lift where the Model T cars were lifted onto the showroom, and it has floor-to-ceiling ladders from when it was an old library.” Inspired by Texas-style barbeque, Wardlaw's Lucky Eye Q is a casual spot serving brisket, pulled pork and ribs. For quick stops in Pond Spring, JK's Country Store is a convenience store off State Route 341.
The Walker County School District
The Walker County School District serves the residents of Pond Spring. Students can begin their education at Cherokee Ridge Elementary School, which scored a B-minus on Niche. They can continue their education at Chattanooga Valley Middle School and Lafayette High School, both of which earned a B on the site. Lafayette offers a career, technical and agricultural education program, as well as LAUNCH, which provides students with the opportunity to complete high school classes and college courses at the same time.
Scenic drives along State Route 341
State Route 341 bisects Pond Spring, serving as the community's major thoroughfare and providing a route to downtown Chattanooga about 17 miles north. This is a car-dependent neighborhood with no public transportation available. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is about 19 miles north.
