Country Club setting, close to freeways
Los Serranos, a Chino Hills neighborhood, was named after Los Serranos Country Club, which opened in 1925. Residential development went into high gear during the 1980s and 1990s, and more subdivisions were added over time.
Tall trees, like palms, pines and cypresses, are nearly always in view, and depending on the direction, mountain backdrops add to the ambiance. The southern end of Los Serranos has more hills than the northern portion. There are some sidewalks, but they may only be on one side of the street.
A convenient commuter home base, Los Serranos is beside State Route 71 and close to state routes 142 and 60. It's about midway between Los Angeles and San Bernardino, each within a 40-mile drive.
Los Serranos provides a serene retreat with easy access to Chino Hills attractions.

Decades of development in Los Serranos
Though there are some older houses, like midcentury ranch-style homes, Los Serranos is categorized mainly by contemporary tract styles. As in much of Chino Hills, homes here are somewhat uniform, often with neutral and earth-tone colors and Spanish-style elements like stucco exteriors and terracotta tile roofing. Yards often have custom landscaping and drought-resistant plants and are enclosed by picket, chain-link or decorative fencing. Driveways and garages are standard, but street parking is also common.
Single-family homes under 1,800 square feet range from $560,000 to $860,000. Homes from 2,500 square feet to 3,400 square feet go for $1 million to $1.5 million. Private pools are an added perk for some properties. Subdivisions include Higgins Ranch, Lexington and Crown Ridge Estates.
Townhouse and condo communities were built in the 2000s to 2020s, and prices typically range from $550,000 to $800,000. Lago Los Serranos, Country Club Villas and Sundance are some of the options.
Not all subdivisions have a homeowners association, but depending on property values and the HOA, monthly fees can be $90 to $290. Some communities are gated.
For those aged 55 and up, Lake Los Serranos is a manufactured home community with a clubhouse, community pool, walking paths and RV storage. Prices range from $120,000 to $395,000, with land leases of $1,500 to $ 1,850 monthly.

Close by is an entrance to Chino Hills State Park, which is over 14,000 acres with more than 90 miles of trails. "Something that people really like getting into is hiking; they are very active in Chino Hills," says Jorge Marquez, a Realtor at Re/Max 2000 who has 12 years of legislative experience in housing policy and served as the mayor of Covina. Although many trails are easy, he says, those who want a challenge can find ones that are more difficult, too.

Café 86, the Commons at Chino Hills
The area around Soquel Canyon Parkway and Los Serranos Country Club Drive has some businesses and dining options. Café 86 has bright drinks and pastries flavored by Ube, a purple yam used in Filipino cooking. There's an Albertsons in this area as well.
Nearby is Chino Hills' first brewery, Luchador Brewing Company, which has a Mexican wrestling theme. Marquez recommends Luchador for get-togethers. There are 15 rotating taps, a Tijuana-style food truck and nights for trivia and musical bingo.
Across SR-71 toward the northeast, there's the Commons at Chino Hills Shopping Center, which has national and regional brands and some smaller businesses. Ray's Duck House, known for Peking Duck and dim sum, has a dining room with upscale décor, including custom lighting.
For more retail variety, it's less than 5 miles to The Shoppes at Chino Hills and Chino Spectrum Marketplace.

Limited public transportation, OmniRide
Public transportation is limited, as fixed-route buses do not operate in this part of Chino Hills. Several Omnitrans bus routes run from the Chino Transit Center, less than 5 miles away. A shared, reservation-based option, OmniRide, covers Los Serranos.
Since the freeways are so close, many people drive or carpool, and there are two Park & Ride lots within 4 miles. Chino Hills is in San Bernadino County but is also close to Los Angeles County and Riverside County. "When it comes to workplaces, you have people going to all those areas," Marquez says. Cities such as Pomona and Diamond Bar are less than 10 miles away.
