Carbon Canyon scenery and seclusion

Sleepy Hollow, founded in 1923, was the first subdivision in the area. It started as a tract of cabins, a weekend retreat from the fast pace of Los Angeles. Set amid the scenery of Carbon Canyon, the neighborhood is sometimes referred to as a hamlet. "We have many longtime residents as well as people who come here to escape the stress of city living," says Christian Fuentes, co-owner of Re/Max Top Producers, and an award-winning team leader. "People move here for the peace and the proximity to nature. There's an abundance of wildlife. You get the most stunning views here." Lending to the ambiance and seclusion of the area, the CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. Sleepy Hollow sits on the edge of Orange and San Bernardino counties. The residential pockets off Carbon Canyon Road, which is state Route 142, have no sidewalks. As the most direct way to travel from Chino Hills to Brea, the route is frequently used by commuters. Though there can be considerable traffic and related noise, SR-142 has a backroad and rural quality with some steep and narrow sections.

Carbon Canyon Road, Hollowman's hello

Sleepy Hollow sits on the edge of Orange and San Bernardino counties. The residential pockets off Carbon Canyon Road, which is state Route 142, have no sidewalks. As the most direct way to travel from Chino Hills to Brea, the route is frequently used by commuters. Though there can be considerable traffic and related noise, SR-142 has a backroad and rural quality with some steep and narrow sections. Thought of as a goodwill ambassador, skeleton figure Hollowman sits at his roadside outpost on SR-142 near Rosemary Lane. He was initially introduced by a nearby resident, after which a neighbor volunteered to keep up with his seasonal wardrobe changes, holiday accessories and the occasional bony sidekicks. Hollowman often reminds drivers to slow down, as the speed limit is 30 mph in his neck of the woods.

Unique Sleepy Hollow hillside homes

Named after Washington Irving's classic short story, which featured the Headless Horseman, Sleepy Hollow has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. Sleepy Hollow is unique within Chino Hills for its history and setting, and some houses have quite a bit of character. A repurposed church and a geodesic dome home are two examples. Over 100 years of real estate are represented here, from bungalows and cabins to ranch-style homes and split-levels to contemporary tract-style houses. Lots are built into the hillsides, leaving little room for backyards. Many interior streets are steep and narrow, only with space for one car at a time. There are few properties for sale at any one time, but prices have ranged from $40,000 to $100,000 for buildable lots and topped off in the mid-$800,000s for single-family homes. Those off the market are typically valued from the $400,000s to $800,000s; several have sold for over $1 million.

Many area trails: one from Overlook Park

Overlook Park has a seating area with valley and mountain views, as well as barbecue and picnic areas and a trailhead for the 2.6-mile Overlook Trail, which is considered moderately strenuous. The trail passes Vellano Park and residential developments Vellano and Oakridge. Chino Hills's many trails are part of an extensive multiuse system. Chino Hills State Park and Carbon Canyon Regional Park are nearby, with even more trails and opportunities for nature immersion. The Chino Hills Community Center is about 5 miles from Sleepy Hollow and has fitness areas, a game room, and a teen center. The closest golf course to Sleepy Hollow, just up Carbon Canyon Road, is at the private Western Hills Country Club, which offers various membership plans.

Chino Hills or Brea for stores

In keeping with its rustic environment, Sleepy Hollow does not have shops or restaurants. It's several miles down SR-142 and into Orange County to reach the village of Olinda, on the outskirts of Brea. Carbon Canyon Coffee Company is a roadhouse-style café where hikers, bikers and car enthusiasts meet up. From there, it's about 6 miles more to central Brea, which includes a mall and big-box stores like Walmart. In the opposite direction, drivers can head northeast on SR-142, first passing Carbon Canyon Express Mart, Sleepy Hollow's closest stop for snacks and sundries. It's another 5 miles to retail areas of Chino Hills, including The Shoppes at Chino Hills, an outdoor mall with 80-some stores and restaurants. There's a farmers market on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Chino Hills grocery stores include Albertsons, Smart & Final and Trader Joe's.
