A historic community with views of downtown Cincinnati
Affectionately nicknamed “The Hill,” Mount Adams has been perched above downtown Cincinnati since the early 1800s. Nicholas Longworth established one of America’s first Catawba vineyards here, and as the wine industry expanded, the neighborhood attracted working-class immigrants and famous politicians from across the country – the namesake John Quincy Adams, for one. The former president took the train to dedicate the area’s observatory in 1843, the most powerful astronomical device of its time. The neighborhood’s most notable landmark, Immaculata Church, was constructed on top of The Hill in 1859 as well. Today, Mount Adams is a walkable neighborhood of rowhouses, restaurants and shops. Its nightlife scene is popular; frequent community events, such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Beaujolais Noveau, celebrate its past. The Ohio River can often be seen along the neighborhood’s eastern side, and downtown entertainment is only about a mile west.
City living in compact rowhomes, new construction
A mix of Victorian and modern architecture, colorful rowhomes are the defining feature of this neighborhood. “Mount Adams is probably the most San Francisco-like area in the Midwest, both from a hillside standpoint and an architectural standpoint,” says Lee Robinson, one of the area’s top Realtors for more than 30 years. “Most are narrow on 25-foot lots, and some have been wonderfully renovated.” Built in the late 1800s, they typically have three bedrooms and two stories. Depending on their age and square footage, they range from $400,000 to $700,000. New construction typically has three bedrooms, too, but they range from one to three million. Their price tag usually includes city and river views, though. They’re in the northern and southern portions of the neighborhood, and developers continue to build these properties throughout the 2020s. Some apartment buildings are on the neighborhood’s west side, and renters make up a majority of the market.

Mount Adams Bar and Grill, Brick Pop-Up Shops
Mount Adams might not be as busy as downtown proper, but its restaurants and shops are walkable along Pavilion Street. Dating back to the Prohibition era, Mount Adams Bar and Grill is an old-timey tavern with charm — tile floors, a wood bar and a sign that reads “No Sniveling.” The Blind Lemon is nearby for a dimly lit cocktail, and the Bow Tie Café specializes in breakfast. Down the hill, the Montgomery Inn Boathouse serves ribs with river views. Walking east into neighboring Pendleton, Brick Pop-Up Shops has rotating vendors, and High St. Boutique has London-inspired home décor. Downtown has a bunch of other shops and restaurants, and it’s about a mile west on the Columbia Parkway.

Historic traditions in this community
In addition to year-round meetups and smaller events, residents have over 15 community-wide festivals. One of these is December’s Reindog Parade, an assembly of dogs and their owners led by Santa Claus himself. “It’s a big deal, and it takes over Mount Adams,” says Realtor Lee Robinson with Robinson Sotheby’s International. “There’ll be hundreds of pets in regalia dressed to the nines.” Continuing a Saint Patrick’s Day tradition, neighbors steal the lucky statue and parade him down the hill from Immaculata. Thousands of people across the city will ascend the church’s steps on Good Friday to “pray the steps” as well. Local bars and restaurants are frequent sponsors of traditions like November’s Beaujolais Noveau, where residents celebrate with torches and taste the first French wine of the season. In addition to their annual neighborhood clean-up, the Mount Adams Beautification Association plants and tends community gardens, and National Night Out promotes police-community partnerships through local food and drink.
Taft Elementary and top-rated Walnut Hills High
William H. Taft Elementary is about a mile north of Mount Adams, and it serves kindergarten through fifth grade. It was one of 21 public schools to receive a federal grant in 2024, which will go to security cameras and other measures. For grades six through 12, students can travel about 3 miles north to Walnut Hills High. Niche ranks it the third-best public middle school in Cincinnati and gives it an A-plus. Close to Eden Park’s botanical gardens and theaters
Cincinnatians know Eden Park for its hillside views of the Ohio River, and Mount Adams residents are just south of it. This green space has over 180 acres of multiuse fields and walking trails, but it’s also home to a 19th-century fire station and a pond called Mirror Lake. Near this lake, the Cincinnati Art Museum holds a 67,000-piece collection, and Playhouse in the Park has year-round shows. On the north side of the park, Krohn Conservatory is a botanical garden with six floral houses, and its butterfly show draws a lot of visitors in the spring. T.M. Berry International Friendship Park is another park along the river; its paths feature colorful flags and modern sculptures. To watch some professional baseball, Great American Ball Park is about 2 miles west, and it’s the home of the Cincinnati Reds.
