A famous cemetery and historic homes in Spring Grove Village

Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum, founded in the mid-1840s, serves as the final resting place for a long list of notable politicians, poets and athletes—at more than 700 acres, it’s also one of the largest burial grounds in the country. The cemetery encompasses nearly half the acreage of Spring Grove Village, a neighborhood about 8 miles from downtown. “There are 52 neighborhoods in Cincinnati, and every one has a distinct flavor,” says Cindy Jo Holmes, a Cincinnati resident and licensed Realtor with Sibcy Cline. Spring Grove Village is one of the city’s oldest, and some homes date back to the late 1800s and the early days of the Spring Grove, Avondale and Cincinnati Railway. A stretch of train tracks remains today beside fast food restaurants and car dealerships; in Cincinnati, history and modernity collide.

Late 19th- and early 20th-century homes

Century-old trees and even older homes line Spring Grove Village’s quiet streets. Victorian Farmhouses, Foursquares, and bungalows constructed between the 1880s and 1920s occupy compact, and sometimes raised, lots. Prices typically range between $100,000 and $200,000, but several outliers exist. Investment properties can sell for less than $100,000, and recently restored historic homes, some of which have stained glass windows and multiple fireplaces, can hover between $260,000 and about $360,000.

Dozens of magnet programs in the Cincinnati Public School District

Spring Grove Village is one of Cincinnati’s 52 official neighborhoods, and students can attend schools within the city’s public school district. There’s the Clifton Area Neighborhood School, which earns a B-minus from Niche and serves kids in prekindergarten through grade three. Before and after school assistance is offered at the nearby Clifton Recreation Center. Cincinnati is home to several dozen magnet schools and nearby options include the C-rated Winton Hills Academy for prekindergarteners through seventh graders, Aiken New Tech High School, which has a C-plus, and Hughes STEM High School, which earns a C. Aiken is known for the Work-Readiness Progam, which allows students to shadow adults in various trades, and there are pathways in fields like software development and health sciences at Hughes STEM High School.

A well-maintained cemetery, an extensive greenway system and Spring Grove Village Pool

Along with thousands of gravestones, Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum is home to towering gothic mausoleums, well-maintained fountains and lakes. On the banks of Mill Creek, Salway Park has several baseball fields. A portion of the Mill Creek Greenway, which spans 50 miles, intersects the park, connecting it to popular locations like downtown Northside and Caldwell Park. The paved trail is home to public art installations and even an edible forest garden; bikers can pick fresh apples and pears in the fall. Winton Commons Park, found in the northern half of the neighborhood, is home to the Spring Grove Village Pool, which has several yearly membership options.

Spring Grove Avenue retail and an eclectic mix of businesses in Northside

Shopping and dining are primarily concentrated in the southern half of the neighborhood off Spring Grove Avenue. There’s a Kroger for groceries, fast food options like McDonald’s and Gold Star, and car dealerships. For an eclectic mix of small restaurants, an old-fashioned pharmacy, and stores selling everything from used records to tarot cards, residents can drive to Northside, a nearby neighborhood that’s long been a countercultural hub in Cincinnati. Park Diner is a popular spot for burgers, fries, and slices of pie, and Sidewinder Coffee is the go-to place for study sessions and business meetings. Fliers in the window advertise live performances at venues like Northside Tavern— “Northside is a really great place for musicians first getting their start,” says Doug Spitz, a long-time local and Realtor with DWELL513, adding, “I saw some pretty great groups back in the day.” The Fourth of July Parade along Hamilton Avenue has been going strong since the 1970s. “We’re not like Chicago or New York, where all you have to say is ‘Let’s go do something,’ but there’s still always something to do here.”

Local manufacturers, commuting to Cincinnati and medical care

There are jobs at manufacturing facilities, food suppliers, and storage centers around the neighborhood, but it’s common for residents to commute to downtown Cincinnati for work. Public buses stop along Spring Grove Avenue, and the 8-mile drive takes about 15 minutes along Interstate 75. Healthcare is central to the city’s economy; Cincinnati Children’s is 4 miles away in Avondale, and The Christ Hospital is 5 miles away in Mount Auburn. The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport has dozens of direct flights to choose from.
