Russian Village homes made with reclaimed materials
A unique residential area is the Russian Village District, which has 1920s and 1930s folk-style or vernacular architecture. The man who bought the land that became the village, Konstanty Stys, though mistaken by some as Russian, was actually Polish. During the Great Depression, Stys sold lots and helped with home designs, which implemented rocks from nearby mountains and salvaged materials as diverse as railroad car siding, oil cans and wreckage from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. "There are some homes with walls made with chunks from a busted-up highway," says Ryan Zimmerman, broker/owner for Concierge Realty Group.
