A rural community with plenty of job opportunities in Blair County
Though there are plenty of employment opportunities in the rural Blair County neighborhood of Claysburg, it can be challenging for incoming residents to buy property. “People have land that’s been in their families for 100 to 150 years. They’re not going to give up that property,” says Rich Allison, who grew up on a farm in Claysburg and now helps to organize the Claysburg Education Foundation and Claysburg P.A.S.T., Preserving Artifacts, Stories and Traditions. Originally formed by German farmers who relocated from Taneytown, Maryland, in the early 1800s, Claysburg became a company town when General Refractories Company established a brickyard in the area in 1913. The brickyard closed in 1987, and other industries have moved in, though farming is still common in the slow-paced community. “We have maybe 5,500 people in the whole town, so it’s a rural area. We’re surrounded by beautiful mountains and greenery, so all the outdoor activities are big here,” Allison says. Locals often spend time hiking or hunting in the Allegheny Mountains or going fishing or boating at nearby lakes.

Interstate 99 takes residents throughout central Pennsylvania
Claysburg is home to the headquarters of beloved regional convenience store chain Sheetz and NPC printing and communications company, so many residents don't have to travel for work. “The quiet roads are great for efficient distribution of product from a logistics standpoint, which is why businesses set up here,” Allison says. Interstate 99 runs north-south through Claysburg, allowing drivers to travel throughout central Pennsylvania. The small city of Altoona, which has big box stores like Target and resources like the UPMC Altoona hospital, is about 18 miles north.
Claysburg residents can travel 10 minutes north to find shopping such as WalMart.
Claysburg is home to the locally famous Sheetz Corporation.

Open lots and ranch-style homes on peaceful roads
Claysburg has plenty of open spaces but limited housing stock. “The town has upgraded the water and sewer to support a larger population, but people aren’t selling their land,” Allison says. “We’re fortunate to have a good list of employment opportunities in the town itself, but with the limited houses, people end up settling in towns 10 to 15 miles away and commuting in.” Existing homes are situated along peaceful country roads on lots that range from a third of an acre to 1.5 acres. Bungalows from the early 1900s cost between $100,000 and $110,000, while split-levels and ranches from the mid-to-late 20th century are priced between $120,000 and $150,000. Some buyers can find open lots to build homes; these usually cost between $15,000 and $18,000 for a third of an acre.

Golfing, swimming and skiing at Blue Knob All Seasons Resort
Adventurous recreational opportunities surround the neighborhood, but if they want to stay more local, residents go to Claysburg Community Park. The public park has pavilions for birthday parties and afternoon picnics, a playground and a short, paved walking trail. There are also baseball fields, sand volleyball courts and basketball courts for pickup games. Blue Knob State Park is 11 miles west of Claysburg and offers wooded nature trails for hiking or biking around the second-highest peak in the state. The park doesn’t have a body of water, but it does have a swimming pool. Blue Knob All Seasons Resort is in the same area, so locals can go golfing in the summer and skiing on 34 manicured trails in the winter. “Raytown Lake, which is the largest in central Pennsylvania, is about 30 miles west of us, too,” Allison says. The freshwater lake is 32 miles long and offers opportunities for boating and fishing.

The Claysburg Education Foundation supports the local school district
Children in kindergarten through sixth grade may attend Claysburg-Kimmel Elementary School. They can advance to Claysburg-Kimmel High School for grades 7 through 12. Both schools have B-minus ratings from Niche. High school students may enroll in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, where they can learn how to begin and operate their own business at Penn State Altoona’s Sheetz Entrepreneurial Center. Allison says that the small school district was dipping in quality, but they’ve rebounded with the help of the Claysburg Education Foundation, which was formed in 2014 and since has raised $1.5 million for the local district. “We were the first to speak the word ‘STEM’ in central Pennsylvania. We offered summer classes for next-to-no charge, and now they’ve incorporated STEM programs into the regular curriculum,” Allison says.
Nostalgic diners and casual eateries in town
The neighborhood has a few long-standing local restaurants. Claysburg Pizza is a laidback Italian eatery serving stromboli, wings and square-cut pizza. At cash-only Peggy’s Diner where residents enjoy comfort food like pancakes, sandwiches, chicken fried steak and apple pie in a classic, nostalgic atmosphere. Shenanigans is a laidback bar serving cocktails, beer, and pub fare, such as burgers and onion rings. There are a few small convenience stores, but residents can drive 5 miles north to get groceries at Walmart Supercenter. If they continue a few more miles north, they can also get groceries at the Martin's in Hollidaysburg or go retail shopping at Target, T.J. Maxx or Sportsman’s Warehouse in Altoona.

Small gatherings at local churches in Claysburg
Altoona is the nearest city where people can travel for larger events; it has the Altoona Curve minor league baseball team and seasonal gatherings at Heritage Plaza in downtown Altoona. The community can try different craft beers and enjoy local food trucks at the Rails and Ales Brewfest in August or support artists and vendors at the Blair County African American Heritage Festival in July. Locally, Claysburg events tend to revolve around places of worship. The Claysburg Church of the Brethren has regular services, church potlucks and yard sales. The Claysburg Church of God organizes chili cook-offs and church picnics, along with their weekly services.
