On the edge of Cambria County, Clearfield Township is a rural community with rolling hills, farmland and access to one of Pennsylvania’s largest state parks. The town was established in 1804, with farming and the area’s pine trees serving as major exports until the discovery of bituminous coal. The town’s mines have since closed, and Clearfield is once again primarily a farming community. Today, the town has a population of just over 1,500 and attracts those looking to move away from the city. “People are attracted to the larger lot sizes,” says Gretchen Gunnett, Team Leader of The Gretchen Gunnett Team at Perry Wellington Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area for over a decade. “If you like the mountains and want privacy, it's a nice area.”
10 miles of trails at Prince Gallitzin State Park
The town is bordered by State Game Lands Number 184, which offers space for hunting and horseback riding. Just to the north, Prince Gallitzin State Park is a 6,200-acre recreation spot with 10 miles of hiking trails and over 1,000 picnic tables. At the park’s center is Glendale Lake, a 1,600-acre man-made lake with a marina and boat launches. There’s also a skatepark near the marina and a sliver of sandy coast with swimming access at Muskrat Beach. In the winter, locals go ice fishing on the lake and snow covers the park, opening the trails up for skiing and snowmobiling.
