Skycrest is close to shopping, schools and parks
Around 3 miles from downtown Clearwater, Skycrest is a mix of residential blocks, commercial centers and schools. But its neighborhood park ensures nature is a short walk or drive away. “A lot of homes have recently been renovated in this neighborhood, and it’s known for a lot of Airbnbs because it’s so strategically located by Tampa Bay,” says Plamen Petkov, a Realtor and broker with #1 Realty Group who has an office in the neighborhood. Commuters can easily take Gulf to Bay Boulevard to Tampa in one direction and Clearwater Beach in the other.
Midcentury homes at a good price point
Mid-century modern ranch-style homes are common in Skycrest, and they sit on a median lot size of less than a quarter of an acre. Yards are shaded by large established trees, as well as palm trees. Most properties have driveways, but streets tend to be wide enough for street parking. Single-family home prices range from $225,000 to $655,000. Duplexes start at $360,000 to $575,000. "It’s a good price point for families who are just starting out,” says Julie Kelsey, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. The neighborhood is not in a flood zone, and flood insurance is not required. The HOA is voluntary and hosts events like an annual Christmas Bicycle ride.
Pinellas County Schools and Skycrest Christian School
Students who live above Gulf to Bay Boulevard can attend Skycrest Elementary, which Niche gives a B-minus, while students living below the boulevard may go to B-plus-rated Plumb Elementary. Oak Grove Middle earns a B-minus, and Clearwater High has a B grade. CHS is home to the Career Academy for International Culture and Commerce, where accepted students can learn about international business during the four-year program. Families can apply to magnet programs at other schools within Pinellas County Schools. Skycrest Christian School is a private school serving preschool through Grade 8 that receives an A grade. It is affiliated with Skycrest Community Church. “People mostly know this neighborhood for the private school and church,” Kelsey says.
Crest Lake Park, Clearwater Beach and golf courses
Crest Lake Park is a peaceful and clean park with a large lake that’s home to native wildlife and a 3-acre dog park. Its amenities include a playground, paved walking trails, and a splash pad that is open year-round. The drive to Clearwater Beach takes around 8 miles or less. The white-sand beach stretches for 35 miles and includes attractions like Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center. Golfers can visit Clearwater Country Club, which has been around for over 100 years and offers seasonal and short-season memberships. The Landings Golf Course is another option, and both are within a few miles.
Gulf to Bay Boulevard, buses and nearby airports
Some homes may be within walking distance of shops, restaurants and amenities, but some roads in the area aren't pedestrian-friendly. “When you're coming from Tampa to Clearwater Beach, Gulf to Bay Boulevard is the main street,” Petkov says. “It’s a busy road and dangerous to walk there.” There are Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus stops along some of the major roads like Drew Street. The drive to St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport takes around 8 miles down the Bayside Bridge, and Tampa International Airport is about 15 miles away on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. The latter offers a shuttle service between the two airports.
Dining at local restaurants and shopping at retail plazas
There are several restaurants and shops along Gulf to Bay Boulevard, which runs through the neighborhood. There’s a mix of chains like Culver’s and local eateries, including Pierogi Grill, serving Polish cuisine. "Skycrest is next to a few shopping plazas,” Petkov says. “There's a nice Publix there and a lot of restaurants.” Downtown Clearwater is a hub for beachy eateries with outdoor seating. Clearwater Mall is also close by with Target and Costco.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
