Cleveland's AsiaTown and a hub for the arts
Goodrich-Kirtland Park has a diverse and artistic community 2 miles east of downtown Cleveland. The neighborhood encompasses AsiaTown, an extension of the city’s historic Chinatown, where Chinese immigrants first made a home in the 1860s. Since then, waves of Vietnamese, Korean and other Asian immigrants have influenced and expanded this diverse environment. “While it is still considered a hidden gem, AsiaTown is a place where anyone can experience Asian cuisine and enjoy shopping at numerous Asian grocery stores as well as participate in many celebrations,” says Johnny Wu, a film producer and co-founder of the Cleveland Asian Festival. The layout of the neighborhood is still largely industrial, though turn-of-the-century brick warehouses are transforming into arts venues and studios to support residents’ creativity.
Restaurants and shopping at Asia Plaza and the Asian Town Center
Goodrich-Kirtland Park is Cleveland’s destination for Asian cuisine. From dim sum at Li Wah Restaurant to Vietnamese staples at Superior Pho, the neighborhood has diverse options. Miega Korean Barbeque offers dinner and entertainment, with grills built into the tables, while Koko Bakery sells sweet and savory buns and bubble teas. Siam Cafe serves pan-Asian dishes in a bright blue building with animal figures out front, each representing a Chinese zodiac sign.
Asian Town Center hosts the Asia Food Company, a large specialty grocery store. On the western end of the neighborhood, Asia Plaza has a Park to Shop Supermarket, another popular option with a bakery, meat counter and Asian produce and snacks.

Locals can participate in or watch the Asian Pop Dance Competition, shop diverse vendors at the outdoor world marketplace or fill up on cuisine from Asian-owned restaurants and food trucks. The festival also offers free health screenings to directly support community members. “With our yearly surveys, it has been shown that people would continue to visit AsiaTown throughout the year, not only during the Cleveland Asian Festival,” Wu says. He says the first year, 2010, attracted about 10,000 attendees, and has grown to nearly 50,000 in the years since. “It has placed AsiaTown on the map.”
