A hub of Cleveland industry is now a nightlife destination

Cleveland’s Warehouse District is full of tall, brick buildings from the 1800s, once home to offices and commercial storage facilities. Many have since been converted into condos and apartments that look down on bar hoppers and fine diners visiting the restaurants below. "You walk out your door and immediately find restaurants, sporting venues, nightlife, entertainment, salons — literally everything is within walking distance,” says Kristin Rogers, a Warehouse District resident and Realtor with Howard Hanna. “That's a big perk for me. I have a car, but I don't need it in this part of town."

Dive bars and upscale eateries draw crowds to the Warehouse District

The Warehouse District is a nightlife destination with classy, upscale restaurants and beloved dive bars. "There are so many great places to eat. Johnny's is one of them. They have a live piano player — we call him the Piano Man,” Rogers says. The Italian restaurant occupies what was once an 1860s general store. For a more “low-key vibe,” Rogers recommends Johnny’s Little Bar next door. The dimly lit neighborhood pub serves burgers and comfort food late into the evening. 27 Club Coffee, owned by rapper Machine Gun Kelly, sells vegan cinnamon rolls in a punky pink interior. Blue Point Grille has won Cleveland Magazine’s Silver Spoon Award for Best Seafood Restaurant every year since opening. During the day, salons, gyms and local shops, such as Krush streetwear, draw foot traffic. Constantino’s Market sells gourmet groceries in the heart of the district. Tower City Center shopping mall is a few blocks away for more shopping and dining.

Walking distance to the Cleveland Browns Stadium

The Cleveland Browns Stadium is adjacent to the neighborhood, hosting games, large-scale concerts and events. The proximity can be a selling point—no more rideshare fees or hunting for parking—but with events come crowds, traffic and increased noise. Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Guardians, and the Cleveland Monsters' hockey arena are less than a mile away. Cleveland’s major tourist attractions are within walking distance. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center are just over a half-mile away. The Jacobs Pavilion concert venue and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium are just across the Cuyahoga River. Downtown hosts a full roster of community events, including Gigs on the Green. On Wednesday evenings in the summer, Public Square hosts free concerts with food trucks and a beer garden.

Walkability and transit options in downtown Cleveland

People here do not need a car to get around: the neighborhood has a Walk Score of 89 out of 100. Wide sidewalks can accommodate large crowds heading to dinner or Warehouse District bars. There’s a high density of Regional Transit Authority bus stops, and both RTA Rapid Transit and the trolley pick up in the neighborhood. For drivers, the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway runs through the area. Parking can be a challenge, with so many visitors descending on the neighborhood.

Condos and apartments in converted warehouses

Most residents live in apartments and condos within converted warehouses. "In this area, you get the character of the older buildings blended with a mix of new elements," Rogers says. "The condos have renovated interiors that can include original wood floors that are 100 years old, or exposed brick, but also newer elements like really nice kitchen setups." Buyers will find glossy granite countertops in the Grand Arcade, the tallest commercial building in Cleveland when it was built in 1883. Another option is the Cloak Factory, a historic garment building that retains turn-of-the-century character elements. Most condos sell between $250,000 and $450,000. Pinnacle Condominiums is the exception to the converted warehouse trend, a luxury high-rise built in 2006 to meet growing demand in the neighborhood. These units can sell for up to $1.5 million.

Wendy Park offers lakeside recreation

Several urban parks surround the Warehouse District, including Wendy Park, situated where the Cuyahoga River meets Lake Erie. In addition to waterfront views, which are especially stunning at sunset, the park has beach volleyball courts, green space and kayak launches. The Whiskey Island Trail welcomes cyclists and walkers and has signage on Cleveland’s lakefront history. Fort Huntington Park's statues honor police officers and prominent figures in Ohio’s history, including American revolutionary Oliver Hazard and athlete Jesse Owens. Pet owners head to Downtown Cleveland Dog Park on Settler’s Landing.

In response to the shooting and downtown crime trends, Cuyahoga County introduced a safety patrol which has seized more than 200 guns in the span of a year.
