A rural town with Dutch roots

Located in the far southwestern corner of New York, Clymer is a tiny rural town dotted with Dutch windmills that may seem out of the ordinary. Yet, they highlight Clymer’s roots as a Dutch village. The town was established in 1821, but long before that, the Holland Land Company purchased over three million acres of land, including modern-day Chautauqua County. A small Main Street features a range of local businesses, while acres of surrounding farmland are home to a large Amish population. "One of the largest draws to Chautauqua County's most rural towns is affordability and privacy," says Heather Chase, a local real estate salesperson with ERA Real Estate who has nearly 10 years of experience in the industry. "You can get acres of land for an affordable price." Affordable farmland draws many buyers, including the Amish, who migrated from Ohio to Clymer in the 1970s. Today, New York State has the fastest-growing Amish population in the nation, and it's apparent in Clymer, where over half of the school district population is Amish.

Clymer Tulip Festival

While Clymer's demographics have changed over the centuries, its Dutch roots remain strong. Every May, the Tulip Festival spans three days of celebration. Fridays kick off with a sausage and sauerkraut social in Clymer Town Park, then a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning before The Wooden Shoe 5K Run. Main Street is overrun with craft shows, food vendors, petting zoos and pony rides, while a town-wide parade winds its way along Main Street on Saturday afternoon.

Hiking trails and skiing at Peek’n Peak

In the heart of town, Clymer Community Park and Playground offers open fields and a large pond for a relaxing picnic, as well as a playground for young kids. Wooded areas like Jacquins Pond Wildlife Management Area and State Game Lands Number 197, just across the Pennsylvania border, offer thousands of acres for hunting, trapping and freshwater fishing. Residents are close to the Westside Overland Trail, which spans 24 miles across six state forests and four towns. Clymer is also home to the Corry-Junction Greenway Trail, which passes through woodlands, wetlands and small streams that stand out amongst blooming wildflowers. This gravel trail parallels the region's old railroad tracks and spans 7 miles from Corry, Pennsylvania, to Clymer, New York. About 7 miles away, Corry's North Hills Golf Course boasts an 18-hole course open to the public. Corry Country Club, a members-only establishment with an on-site restaurant and sports courts, is down the road. Eight miles away, Peek'n Peak Resort offers year-round recreation and features a golf course, swimming pools and zip lines. In the winter, Peek'n Peak transforms into a hub for skiing, snowboarding and tubing. They also host events like Breakfast with Santa, theatrical dinner performances and the Fall Fest. "The Fall Festival is amazing," Chase says. "It's the largest festival in the region," with over 100 food and craft vendors, live music and family-friendly entertainment.

It's known for its classic American fare, freshly baked bread and pies, and cozy atmosphere. Across the street, Neckers Company General Store has been serving the community since 1910. The family-owned business sells a mix of just about everything, including dry goods, fresh-cut meats, home decor and apparel, and made-to-order pizza, subs and wraps. Other local stores include Clymer Hardware & Home Center and The Windmill Flowers Gifts & Chocolates for fresh bouquets, gift baskets and more. One school in town

The Clymer Central School District serves the community. However, since there is only one school in town, Niche has no overall grade for the district. Pre-kindergarteners through twelfth graders may attend Clymer Central School, which scores a B-minus rating from Niche. As of 2024, 360 students attend Clymer Central. Class sizes are small, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 9-to-1. Clymer Central School also offers an after-school homework club for elementary schoolers. About 17 miles away, students may utilize the Hewes Educational Center. The center is one of several operated by the Board of Cooperative Educational Services. It offers career and technical classes, adult education and special education to surrounding districts that are too small to provide these services independently. The campus also boasts the Chautauqua Safety Village, where children can learn traffic rules and safety at a young age.

Backcountry commutes

The Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System offers bus service to rural communities like Clymer by request. The Clymer Post Office is home to the town's only bus stop, and residents must call ahead of time to schedule a ride. Otherwise, residents rely on personal vehicles. County Touring Route 15 runs north to south, while New York State Route 474 runs east to west. The town is home to a small rural health clinic, and Corry Memorial Hospital is about 8 miles south in Pennsylvania. Erie International Airport is about 40 miles west via New York State Route 8 and Interstate 90.
