In the 1820s, David Cogan arrived in a valley north of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and built a log house. It was one of the only homes in this stretch of wilderness, prompting people to refer to the area as Cogan’s House. Cogan abandoned the home less than 20 years later when he got tired of being one of only two people living in the valley. Nearly 200 years after Cogan left the area, Cogan House’s remote setting is a reason people want to live in the township. The number of homes has grown from two to nearly 200, but it remains a largely rural area, defined by houses, farms and churches dotting a valley among the Appalachian Mountains. U.S. Route 15 passes through, providing a direct route 20 miles south to Williamsport, the region’s biggest city.

Enjoying the outdoors from summer to winter
Kids can blow off steam just off Route 184 at the township’s playground and music garden, which features chimes and drums children can play. Larger recreation areas include State Game Lands No. 114, where hunters may find deer, turkey and bobcats. About 15 miles from Cogan House, Little Pine State Park covers 2,100 acres of forests and lakefront. Visitors can swim and hike when it’s warm or go sledding and cross-country skiing in the winter. When the snow starts falling, people can hit the slopes at Ski Sawmill Resort, 6 miles north of the township.

1 million turkey dinners over 85 years
It doesn’t have to be Thanksgiving to find a turkey feast in the township. Fry Brothers’ Turkey Ranch has served a million turkey dinners since it opened in Cogan House in 1939, with 100,000 diners stopping at the roadside restaurant and gas station annually. The eatery is one of a handful of family-run businesses in the township. Another example is Newswangers Seeds & Plants, a greenhouse with a tradition of welcoming customers with free homemade doughnuts and coffee every Mother’s Day. The closest place to go shopping is Liberty, a small borough 7 miles north of Cogan House. Dollar General carries everyday necessities, while Martin's Pantry down the road slices meats and cheeses at its deli and makes fresh bread loaves and cinnamon rolls at its bakery. Martin's Pantry sometimes carries local produce, but stocking up on groceries typically requires a trip to Garden View, a neighborhood 9 miles south of Cogan House. The neighborhood is home to Weis Markets grocery store and an Aldi. Montoursville, a borough 25 miles from Cogan House, has a Walmart and Lowe’s Home Improvement. The nearest hospital for residents on the east side of the township is UPMC Williamsport, about 20 miles away, while those on the west side are about 15 miles from Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital.

History and helping hands at local churches
Churches thrived in Cogan House at the turn of the 20th century, and multiple small congregations remain. White Pine United Methodist Church has brought worshippers together since 1860. Meanwhile, Cogan House Community Church runs an outreach program that helps elderly members of the community heat their homes, pick up groceries and buy medication.

Residents gather at the township municipal building and adjoining playground for Cogan House Community Day in September. While kids run around the playground, adults compete in games such as corn hole and tug-of-war. A deejay handles the music, and everyone dines on barbecue chicken dinners.
Campus shakeup in Southern Tioga School District
The two public school campuses children typically attend are across the street from each other in the borough of Liberty, 6 miles north of Cogan House. Liberty Elementary School and North Penn-Liberty Junior/Senior High School, which teaches seventh through 12th graders, get a C from Niche. Breakfast and lunch are free for all students at both schools. Due to underpopulated schools, Southern Tioga School District will close two campuses and reorganize attendance zones by 2027, requiring students to go to a new school in Blossburg, about 10 miles north of Liberty, for grades six through 12.

Highway connection to Williamsport, Liberty
Residents need cars to get around the township, where an average work commute is 30 minutes each way. U.S. Route 15, the primary roadway, connects Cogan House to the borough of Liberty to the north and the city of Williamsport to the south. In Williamsport, drivers can get on Interstate 180 and travel throughout the metro area. Cogan House is about 200 miles from both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
