Quiet, rustic living in this southwestern Colorado Springs neighborhood
Set between Fort Carson Army Base and the Rocky Mountains, Rock Creek is an expansive, rural community with custom homes and loads of natural beauty. Split-rail fences surround many properties, and wildlife like deer, birds and even bears roam the lush forestland. Longtime Colorado Springs resident Alan Arata says homebuyers here are drawn to that. “There’s just something about going out on your deck and smelling the pine and fir trees,” he says. “If you want to live in an area like that, you want to live in nature where it can be quiet.” Arata, a Realtor for Keller Williams Clients’ Choice Realty, adds that people move here for the solitude and freedom of choice in homebuilding. Homeowners have access to dozens of trails in the scenic Cheyenne Mountain State Park, and shopping and dining spots are also a few miles north via State Highway 115. The area also boasts a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national figure of 4.
Hiking through the forest at Cheyenne Mountain State Park
With the green and tan Front Range mountains bordering Rock Creek in the west, locals can hike and explore some of Colorado’s best views. Within the neighborhood is Cheyenne Mountain State Park, which has over 1,600 acres of dense forest to comb through and about 27 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Folks can bring their bows and arrows to Archer’s Alley near the park's southeast corner to practice shooting at 3D targets. Further south, the Aiken Canyon Preserve has plenty of open space for hiking, including the 4-mile-long Aiken Canyon Loop Trail, where travelers can search for birds around the foothills. The roadside May Natural History Museum has colorful insects on display, including butterflies, beetles and spiders; it’s easy to spot, thanks to Herkimer, a 10-foot-tall, 16-foot-long replica of one of the largest beetles in the world. Herkimer was built in 1952, has six legs and a long, rhino-like horn and sits along State Highway 115.

Plenty of lot space and custom homes in Rock Creek
Sprawling forestland and clear views of Cheyenne Mountain can be seen while driving on the unmarked winding roads in Rock Creek. It’s also not uncommon to see occasional “slow down” signs for bikers in the area or wildlife like deer, turkeys and even bears.
Most homes in Rock Creek are located near the eastern portion of the community. Midcentury to late 20th-century ranch-style houses and manufactured homes sit on sizable lots with enough room for trailers and tractors. Prices can range between $20,000 for manufactured properties that have not been refurbished and up to $100,000 for larger homes with upgrades. Depending on square footage, these single-family homes are priced between $450,000 and $650,000.
Two-story custom-built properties from the 1990s to early 2010s are spread throughout the neighborhood; some sit high in the hills of the Rocky Mountains. “People buy the lots and put whatever they want on them,” Arata says. Housing styles include new traditional and Northwest-style, and these homes feature long, paved driveways, stucco and stone exteriors and wrap-around decks. Lot sizes can vary from five to over 30 acres, and a small collection of homes sit in gated, HOA-controlled subdivisions like Turkey Canon Ranch. Prices typically range between $750,000 and $1.1 million; the larger the lot, the more expensive the house, generally.
Log cabin-style homes in Red Rock start at around 645,000 dollars.

Career-focused curriculum at Florence High
Children here attend the Fremont School District Re-2. Since Colorado is a “school choice” state, families outside the district can apply for a spot during open enrollment at the beginning of the year. Fremont Elementary offers kindergarten through sixth grade and earns a B-minus from Niche. For grades 7 through 12, kids can move on to Florence High, rated B-minus. The school is a part of the Fremont Multidistrict Initiative, which offers classes in career pathways like computer information systems and health sciences to multiple school districts across the region.

The park also collaborates with the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society to host Star Parties, where visitors can check out different constellations through massive telescopes near the Limekiln Trailhead. In October, residents can head north to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for the Boo at the Zoo holiday celebration. Prepping for fires in Rock Creek
Wildfires are a normal part of life near Rock Creek because of its thick, wooded terrain. Some parts of the neighborhood are even a part of the Wildland-Urban Interface, an area between unoccupied land and human development, and historically, these zones are way more susceptible to wildfire destruction. The Colorado Springs Fire Department recommends homeowners harden their homes by installing double-pane windows and ignition-resistant materials on roofs. Colorado Springs Fire Station 16 is also a couple of miles north of the neighborhood.
