A sleepy community 23 miles from Hartford, Columbia is home to quiet forests and a strong sense of community.

Homes can reach up to $825,000 for three bedrooms, four baths and 3,000 square feet on a whopping 18 acres of land. Houses around Columbia Lake, a popular recreation area, can go for around $650,000 for four bedrooms, three baths, and 2,000 square feet on half an acre of lakeside real estate. Wherever you decide to settle down, once you find a house you like, buy quickly. "Houses are flying off the shelf," says Pat Malek, a Realtor with First Choice Realty. "Inventory is super low across the state, and some houses are going for $10,000 to $40,000 over the listing price."
Columbia Lake is the town's biggest draw. "The lake is popular because you have full boating, water skiing and swimming access," Malek says. "It's a wonderful town." It's common to see a gaggle of folks hanging around the town's public access launch and others frolicking in the water, casting a line, or boating around the lake's edges. It's a fun and community-focused part of Columbia and is a staple of town life during the warmer months.
Students in town can attend the Horace W. Porter School, which serves grades K-8 and has a B rating from Niche. It's part of the Columbia District, which offers three high school options for students; Bolton High School, E.O. Smith High School and Windham Technical High School. Bolton High School has a B+ rating on Niche and offers a peer-to-peer writing center for its students. E.O. Smith High School has an A rating on Niche and is the No. 1 ranked public high school in Tolland County, according to the site. E.O. Smith High has excellent ratings for its teachers, clubs, activities and academics and offers a well-regarded agri-science program. Windham Technical High School offers a variety of career and technical education learning programs, including carpentry, culinary arts and health technology.
Route 6 runs through town and offers access to the surrounding area along with restaurants. You can bring your main squeeze to The Main Moose, a popular local spot known for its burgers, dogs, sandwiches and ice cream. Whatever you order, you can enjoy your meal in the restaurant's outdoor seating area. The restaurant is open from June to October every year, so it's a nice seasonal treat to enjoy when you live in town.
Columbia is a calm destination for a homebuyer looking for rural living. At 23 miles from Hartford, you're set deep into rural Connecticut, where you'll be able to make the most of the peace and quiet that country living offers.
