An outdoorsy Columbia community less than 5 miles from downtown Columbia

Grindstone-Rock Quarry is anchored by Rock Quarry Road, which has become one of the city's iconic routes. "It's like the Ozark Mountains right here in Columbia," says Realtor Ryan Martin with Real Broker, who has experience in the area. "There are rolling hills, big open timber and clear water creeks — the further south you go, the more it turns into a country road — eventually, you get gravel." Some properties exemplify remote living with their multiacre lots, but most are rental options that students at the nearby University of Missouri, known as Mizzou, take advantage of. Perhaps the best way to explain this community's coexistence with nature, is through Martin's anecdote of how some students get to school—"People have ridden horses [from here] to Mizzou. Literally, I've seen pictures of it."

A rental-centric community with some single-family housing options

Most of Grindstone-Rock Quarry's housing options are made up of apartments. However, there are also a limited number of single-family homes. On the north side, properties typically sit on half an acre and sell for anywhere between $250,000 and $425,000. On the south side, there are also a handful of large homes on multiacre, wooded lots. These don't go on the market often, but when they do, they typically range from $400,000 to $600,000, depending on acreage. Regardless of location, styles are consistent here and most homes feature brick ranch-styles or contemporary two-story builds. Grindstone-Rock Quarry is also home to some condos, which typically cost between $150,000 and $250,000. Forthcoming in the near future is the Clear Creek Estates community. Lots here range from between 2 and 5 acres and start at $300,000.

Rock Quarry Park, Grindstone Nature Area and Rock Bridge Memorial State Park

Located at the community's border, Rock Quarry Park features tennis courts and a playground. The Grindstone Nature Area is a popular hiking destination to the north. Trails meander along creeks and through wooded areas that feature wildflowers like trout lilies. The park's leash-free rule makes this a popular spot for dog owners. To the south, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park offers hiking trails and caving opportunities. There are over 10 caves in the park, but not all are open for exploration. The park also features natural formations, including sinkholes and its namesake rock bridge.

There are no restaurants within the Gridnstone-Rock Quarry community, but Martin recommends nearby options like Murry's. In the 2021 Feast Magazine awards, it was voted Columbia's 'local favorite' and best spot for 'late-night dining.' With an a la carte menu, live jazz music on most nights and mood lighting, the eatery has become one of the city's most popular options, according to Martin. He also suggests the steakhouse CC's City Broiler. It won Feast Magazine's best steak, chef and waitstaff awards in 2022. For groceries, there is an Aldi location about 2 miles away.
