Historic suburbia in South Carolina
Established in the late 1890s, Cottontown, also known as the "Bellevue Historic District," one of Columbia’s earliest planned suburbs that has grown extensively into the charming neighborhood of today. Residents will find the town’s history apparent in the many museums in the area, including the Historic Columbia Museum, the Columbia Museum of Art and the South Carolina State Museum. Along with preserving the town’s history, Cottontown residents also hold many community events like the annual Art Crawl. The University of South Carolina is just 2 miles away, which also brings in a lot of art and culture, according to Scarlett Herbkersman, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who has lived in the area most of her life. “I always look forward to the football events in the Fall,” she says. “We have a lot going on here, but also much to do outside the area. We’re in a great location.”
That community feel, combined with the area’s historic homes that have maintained their architectural integrity and its proximity to downtown, make Cottontown one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the Columbia area. Cottontown is a neighborhood that appreciates its history while enjoying the bustle of city life around it, checking all the boxes for homebuyers looking for the best of both worlds.

Annual art events, weekly shopping hauls
The typically quiet streets of Cottontown come to life when front porches and lawns fill up with the works of local artists for the annual Cottontown Art Crawl in the Spring. The celebration of the city’s art scene takes up several blocks of this historic neighborhood with food trucks and live music and intertwines nearby local restaurants. Mediterranean cuisine on Main Street
Residents can pick up grocery staples at the Publix on Gervais Street, nearly 2.5 miles south of the neighborhood. While the area got its name from the crop extensively harvested in South Carolina, many cotton storage warehouses in Cottontown have since been replaced by local coffee shops and restaurants. Indah Coffee is housed in a 1940s industrial building, where residents can start their day with a cup of joe and croissant. Right outside the neighborhood, on Main Street, is where Noma Bistro by Al Amir sits, offering residents authentic Mediterranean food. On the other side of town, locals can enjoy a cold beer with a side of appetizers at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant. “A great aspect about the area is the breweries,” says Herbkersman. “My favorite being Bier Keller. You get nice views and authentic German beer and food.”
