A historic mill community near downtown Columbia
Olympia-Granby is a neighborhood bordered by downtown Columbia and the Congaree River. It was once home to textile mill workers who worked in South Carolina's first cotton mill, but Olympia Mill has been converted into an apartment complex, and the area is now home to many locals who commute into downtown Columbia. Many University of South Carolina students also live in the neighborhood, so most residents rent apartments or early 20th-century properties, taking advantage of Olympia-Granby's easy access to downtown Columbia and the university. On days locals would like to eat out, they can head to restaurants like J's Restaurant & Bar, which offers classic southern comfort food. Parks are scattered around the area, and some, like Granby Park, offer visitors access to the Congaree River. South Carolina's State Fairgrounds and the University's Williams-Brice Stadium are also nearby, giving locals entertainment opportunities a little outside the city's center.
Bungalows, Colonial Revivals and other early 20th-century homes
Early 20th-century properties like bungalows, Foursquares and colonial-inspired homes line Olympia-Granby's narrow streets. Properties typically sit close together on small lots, ranging from just upwards of $100,000 for a 3-bedroom bungalow needing renovation to upwards of $400,000 for a 1920s 4-bedroom Colonial Revival property. Elaine Gillespie, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker who has sold multiple properties in the area, says, "There's a lot of homes that have been or will be restored." A partially renovated 1920s duplex can go for $200,000, and a 3-bedroom Foursquare can go for upwards of $250,000. Many homes do not have garages, so residents often park on their driveways or the street. Most residents are renters, and many are students who rent apartments in historic properties like the Olympia Mill, a textile mill later converted into an apartment complex.
Residents of this Olympia-Granby bungalow enjoy plenty of outside seating space.
