Sandy Run offers quiet and remote country living 20 miles from Columbia
Bound by the Congaree River, Sandy Run marks the start of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. The neighborhood is sparsely populated, home to paved and dirt backroads lined by dense pinelands and tall switchgrass. “The only thing there is a Dollar General – that’s how small it is,” says longtime local Leon Felder, owner-broker of Felder & Associates. “But it is country living. Small, rural, beautiful with lots of wildlife.” About 20 miles south of Columbia in Calhoun County, the community is close to manufacturing plants, including a Starbucks roasting plant, and abuts the over-25,000-acre Congaree National Park.
A variety of homes on an acre or more – rare on the market
Outside of small subdivisions like River Mill and the gated Baker Hill Lake, Sandy Run is HOA-free and features spacious lots, most being an acre or more. Sales data is limited since homes here aren’t listed often. When they do come on the market, manufactured houses roughly cost between $100,000 and the mid $200,000s. Most other three- to four-bedroom properties range from around $200,000 to almost $700,000, depending on square footage, acreage, water frontage and condition. Home styles vary from quaint, Minimal Traditional cottages and bungalows to midcentury ranch-style and New Traditional new construction homes. The Lowcountry is more vulnerable to extreme weather like hurricanes. Calhoun County advises residents to learn their evacuation route and zone. Hurricane season ranges from June to November.
A K-8 school in the community and a basketball powerhouse high school nearby
The Calhoun County School District opened Sandy Run K8 School on the neighborhood’s east side in 2008. Today, the school has a C-plus on Niche. Calhoun County High School is about 15 miles south, right off Old State Road/U.S. Route 176. Home of the Saints, it earns a B grade and is locally known for its boys’ varsity basketball team, which holds the state record for most consecutive wins at 78. Felder credits a lot of the success to head coach Zam Fredrick, a retired professional basketball player and University of South Carolina legend. “He’s a hall-of-famer, and he’s been a coach for almost 40 years,” he says. In 2023, after winning 10 state titles, Fredrick was inducted into the South Carolina Coaches Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Sandy Run is across the river from Congaree National Park
The Sandy Run Community Center is a quaint building on U.S. Highway 176 that hosts occasional bingo nights, square dances, dinners and private events. Congaree National Park is just across the water from Sandy Ridge. Its hardwood forest has over 25 miles of trails; however, most terrain is bottomland, so hikers should keep up with the weather due to regular flooding. While the trails are popular for hiking, cycling and backpacking, Congaree National Park is also a destination for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and wildlife observation. The forest is home to over 200 bird species and various critters, such as armadillos, flying squirrels, bobcats, foxes and otters. Visitors can watch for animal activity on the shore as they paddle down the Congaree River Blue Trail, which begins 50 miles upstream in Columbia and ends at the national park.
Aside from Dollar General, shopping options are 10 miles away or farther
Dollar General is the only retail choice in Sandy Run, and a handful of gas stations are off the main roads. On weekends, local vendors sell fresh produce at the South Carolina Farmers Market, about 10 miles up the road. The closest grocery store, Food Lion, is also 10 miles away in the town of Gaston. More shopping and dining options are, of course, in Downtown Columbia, 20 miles away.
I-26 makes quick work of drives to the closest airport and hospital
Interstate 26 runs through the heart of the neighborhood. It intersects U.S. Route 21 on the south side and U.S. Route 176 on the north side. I-26 has an exit onto Airport Boulevard, just over 15 miles away, making drives to Columbia Metropolitan Airport simple. Lexington Medical Center, just under 20 miles away, has the nearest emergency room.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
