Go big and go home: there’s plenty of room to spread out within the multibedroom homes and vacant, forested lots of Oregon Township. With a population density of one person per acre, this wooded sanctuary has retained its natural landscape since the Township was established in 1846.

Once homeowners settle into their secluded homes amongst the trees, lakes and fields, they tend to stay. So prospective buyers may take the opportunity to build their own home on a land parcel, which sells for $27,500 to $91,000. Rather not start from scratch? Homes with surrounding acreage sell for $115,000 to $535,000. Oregon Township homes are mostly valued at around $225,000, which is below the national average home price. Residents enjoy spacious interiors in their farmhouses, split-levels and ranch-style homes.

Nature is the main source of entertainment for folks in Oregon Township. Go birding, fishing and boating in Zemmer Park and Holloway Reservoir. Let off steam at Torzewski County Park: from Pero Lake to the covered amphitheater to the waterslide, you can spend your whole Saturday here. This park also has a newly added disc golf course and playground among its open meadows and forested land. And during open season from August 1 to March 31, hunters enjoy access to public and private land, including two Lapeer State Game Areas where they will find deer, snowshoe hare, quail and more.

Lapeer Community Schools provide kids in Oregon Township with a promising education. Niche gives a B to Schickler Elementary, which supports prekindergarten through Grade 5. Niche awards a B-minus to Rolland-Warner Middle for Grades 6 and 7; Zemmer Middle for Grades 8 and 9; and Lapeer High for Grades 10-12. The Lapeer County School District offers work-based learning, which benefits students eager to enter the workforce or college after graduation. Alternatively, CenterPoint Christian Academy is the No. 2 Best Private preK through Grade 12 School in the Flint Area, according to Niche. It’s got a student-teacher ratio of 9 to 1 for those who don’t mind the 16-mile drive.

Oregon Township has small convenience stores for everyday essentials and LJ’s Farm Market for fresh produce. But typically, residents head 6 miles southeast to Lapeer for groceries, restaurants, and fun. Pick up groceries at Kroger or Aldi, then swing by Dagwood’s and Blondie’s, a lunch favorite for coffee, tea and sandwiches. As far as local events, families love the annual Rubber Duck Dash in Cramton Park: “Throw rubber duckies into Farmers Creek, and whoever’s duck gets across the water first wins!” says Rehne Voss, Realtor at Coldwell Banker. With 18 years of experience in the area, Voss keeps tabs not only on real estate but on all things local: “And every August, Lapeer Days Festival has a carnival, parade, beer tent and food trucks.”

Residents love the quiet, rural lifestyle that Oregon Township gives them. Indeed, it’s not walkable or bikeable and has no public transit beyond school buses, but locals have happily traded traffic and honking cars for green space and babbling brooks.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
