Here for the Hilliard City School District

Cross Creek is a typical suburb. What makes it unique is that homes here are zoned for the highly rated Hilliard City School District, while locals benefit from Columbus' lower tax bracket. Drew Dorfmeyre, who works for Hillard's parks and recreation department, grew up on one of this neighborhood's cul-de-sac streets with modest lawns, sidewalks and mature trees. "My house backed up to the main road, Hilliard Rome Road. My parents still live there." What was nice about that, he shares, is that he could walk to the local elementary school. Residents live 11 miles northeast of downtown Columbus and east of a popular 54-acre park with a stream and several ponds. When homes go on the Cross Creek market, many get multiple offers. "The amount of house you get for your money is pretty good in Cross Creek," says Realtor Dan Russell with Howard Hanna Real Estate.

Cookie-cutter homes in Cross Creek's subdivisions

The homes in Cross Creek were built in the early 1990s, and there's a pattern of bi-level, colonial and ranch-style homes. "The same developer built the homes, which have one of six or seven-floor plans," Russell says. "You're not going to deviate much from those home styles in this neighborhood." Most homes settle between the $300,000 to $400,000 range, but there is a tiny townhome subdivision toward the east in Cross Creek where homes are in the $100,000 to $200,000 range. The average home stays on the market for about 15 days.

Walking to Hilliard Crossing Elementary School

Hilliard City School District is rated A-minus by Niche. In contrast, Columbus City School District earns a C-minus rating, leaving much to be desired for some parents. Hilliard Crossing Elementary School is in Cross Creek, and some homes are just steps from its facility. Students may also attend Hilliard Heritage Middle School and Hilliard Darby High School, just 3 miles north of Cross Creek's center in Hillard. The elementary and middle schools score B ratings from Niche, while the high school earns an impressive A minus.

Swimming at A. Reynolds Municipal Park

The most popular park nearby, according to Dorfmeyre, is Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park - just 3 miles northeast. "It's where we have our pool and ballfields, and we also have a big stream in the back that people walk along," he says. Though Dorfmeyre rarely sees people kayaking and canoeing, they are fishing. "There's a stream and two ponds; those are both filled with fish." This 130-acre green space is home to the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center, an 18-hole disc golf course, and an inclusive playground with swings for all ages, an Omni climber with rope, and more.

A slice of Germany at Hillgarten Beer & Wine Garden

There's a shopping complex 2 miles down Hilliard Rome Road with Dick's Sporting Goods, Marshall's, LA Fitness, Sephora, Sam's Club and a Meijer supermarket. Old Hilliard on Main Street, 3 miles north, is also a go-to - especially after being renovated in 2020. "It's now a gathering place for people," says Libby Gierach, the president & CEO of the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce. "Something is going on all year, including the Celebration at the Station series, offering free music every week at Hilliard Station Park in the summer." While there, locals can visit Hillgarten Beer & Wine Garden, which offers a slice of Germany through its craft brews and menu items like "The Berlin" - an authentic currywurst brat. Heritage Park, just a walk away, connects to the paved, nearly 7-mile heritage trail with a parallel equestrian path.
