A new chapter will be written in the Eastland neighborhood after the Eastland Mall shut down for good after more than 50 years in business in December of 2022. There is hope for the future, however. “It’s up and coming at this stage of the game,” says Don Payne, president and Realtor at Vision Realty. “The city of Columbus will pump some money into it and turn it around.” In late June of 2023, the Columbus City Council approved a contract with a design company to develop a comprehensive plan, which could take a year and a half. Part of the plan is to get input from the community on what they’d like to see there.

There is a mix of condos, single-family homes and duplexes in Eastland. Most homes are in the $100,000 to $200,000 range, with many condos going for under $100,000. The condos were built in the early 1970s and have two bedrooms, one bathroom, just under 1000 square feet of space and a shared wall with another unit. The age of the single-family homes varies in Eastland, with ranch-style homes with around 1500 square feet of space built in the 1950s. You can also find split-level, one-story, and ranch-style homes built in the 1980s. Yet another part of Eastland has two-story contemporary homes built in the late 2000s that are between $200,000 and $300,000 with two-car attached garages and over 2,000 square feet of space. The duplexes total, between two units, over 1800 square feet, each with two bedrooms and one bathroom. With the condition of some of the homes, there are investors in Eastland. Payne sees opportunities for getting in on the ground floor. “It may take some time, but it will be redeveloped. Revaluations will go up as a result,” he says.

When it’s time to get some outdoor exercise, there’s plenty of space to do it at Helsel Park. There are 41 acres of green space, which makes it a popular place for weekend soccer and other youth sports activities. The park also backs up against Big Walnut Creek. On the south side of that creek, you can join the Big Walnut Trail, a path following the waterway. While on the trail, you can access Noe Bixby Park, which is a little bit to the northeast.

Grocery shopping has an international flavor in Eastland. Saraga International Grocery offers food from all over the world, with specialty foods from various countries assigned to their own aisle. A large produce section is also part of the 100,000 square feet of space. Makkah Market is a market that specializes in Pakistani food, specializing in Middle Eastern-style gyros. A taste of Mexico, everything from sweets to meats, is available at La Michoacana Market. It’s a short drive down Hamilton Road for Giant Eagle and Aldi for a more domestic flavor.

Kids in Eastland attend schools in the Columbus City School District. Easthaven Elementary School serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Niche says the school has an 18-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. The staff’s mission at Yorktown Middle School is to make students 21st-century learners who are critical thinkers and effective communicators. Independence High School has 759 students in grades nine through 12, and Niche says the student-to-teacher ratio is 17-to-1.

With quick access to Interstate 270 when you travel south on Hamilton and Interstate 70 as you travel north, it provides easy access to get downtown, which is only 10 minutes away. There’s quick access to John Glenn Columbus International Airport via I-270, less than a 15-minute drive.
