Classical homes and easy access to Columbus’s best attractions

Once home to a largely Italian immigrant population in the 19th century, the Italian Village neighborhood near downtown Columbus is filled with history. The area’s connection to industrial jobs during its early days drew in a significant number of residents, with a short walk to some of Columbus’s largest factories and businesses downtown. Built in 1898, St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church was the backbone of the area’s Italian American community. Today, the church is still a pillar of the community, hosting events like the annual Italian Festival. In addition to the immigrant community that gave Italian Village its name, this neighborhood in central Columbus has been home to a diverse range of residents over the years, including large Black and Irish populations. Former industrial buildings like the Wonder Bread Factory and the Berry Brothers Bolt Works stood as pillars of the area’s economy before becoming apartments and commercial spaces, giving Italian Village a past-meets-present vibe. A few blocks west, the lively Short North Arts District showcases some of Columbus’s most vibrant art and businesses. Like its neighbors in the Short North and Victorian Village, the once industrialized area went through a downturn in the mid-20th century before making a major comeback thanks to its residents' dedication to urban renewal efforts.

Italianate homes and modern condominiums

Historic Italianate rowhouses are part of why the Italian Village name stuck around. Classically modeled homes with flat or low-pitched roofs, ornamented windows and multiple stories give the area a particular look, with many homes being restored and registered as historic places. Select Victorian and Queen Anne homes can also be found nearby. Alongside the revitalized historic homes, a variety of contemporary condos and townhomes on the neighborhood’s east end and near the Jeffrey Park subdivision on its north side fill out the market. Prices range from about $300,000 for a small condo to more than $1 million for a newly built four-bedroom home, with an average single-family home selling near the $482,000 mark. Most residents in Italian Village rent their living spaces, with only about 27% of its population owning a home.
