It’s one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, and today Karn's Park is one of the most eclectic, with many historical houses. "I think it's important to highlight the diversity in the neighborhood," says Misty Linn, owner and Realtor with Core Realty Collection. "You have some new builds, and then you have the history of the older homes and the character of the architecture that you just can't get out of the newer homes."

Linn has been a resident of Karn's Park since 2005. “Living here, you have a sense of neighborhood pride. People have been living here for decades, and they’ve seen the changes.” Today, revitalization is taking place as historic homes are being restored to the homes they once were. Thanks to money pumped into the community, long-ignored houses got fixed up.

There are various architectural styles as you travel down any street in Karn's Park. That would include Victorian, Queen Anne, Gothic Revival and Colonial Revival. “You have old brick homes that were built hundreds of years ago that are still standing,” Linn says. “They’re anywhere between 2800 and 5000 square feet.” A four-bedroom, three-bath Victorian that’s close to 3000 square feet can run $355,000 and a three-story Victorian, over 4300 square feet, with four bedrooms and four bathrooms, located in the historic district on Bryden Road, was $620,000. The median sales price is $529,100, and homes stay on the market for an average of 86 days.

The neighborhood association holds a tour of historic homes every summer in July. People all over Columbus look outside and inside at some of the most beautiful and historically significant properties. And because holidays are a big deal here, the neighborhood association holds decoration contests for the Christmas and Halloween seasons, with the neighborhood voting on the most festively decorated house.

Businesses in the neighborhood include Upper Cup Coffee Company. The owners want to make the coffee experience authentic and organic. The world is in your cup as they make and sell coffee using beans from Bali, Honduras and Brazil.

The perfect hangout for brunch is at Hangover Easy on Parsons Avenue. Walking in, you might think you’re in a record store. There are images of Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones on the walls and ceilings, but the food is pure diner grub with attention-grabbing menu item names. The “Struggling to Get Up” is the name for their two buttermilk pancakes with whipped butter. A bacon, sausage and fried egg sandwich on a glazed donut is called the “Walk of Shame.”

On Ohio Avenue, near the intersection with Madison Avenue, is the Olde Towne East Pocket Park. This is a small parcel of land where a home once stood. A revived space was born through the “Parcels to Places” program from the City of Columbus. The program focuses on transforming once vacant or neglected lots into small spaces that the whole community can use. Currently, it’s an urban garden where fresh fruits are available to the neighborhood.

Students in the neighborhood can attend Ohio Avenue Elementary, Champion Middle or the recently renovated East High School in the Columbus City School System. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the renovation in 2008, a new gymnasium and atrium were built, but those additions stayed true to the school's original architecture.
