The origin of King-Lincoln Bronzeville

King-Lincoln Bronzeville is making a concerted effort to “revitalize the neighborhood while still holding onto its historical roots,” says Suzanne Flowers, a real estate agent with Key Realty who is a native of Columbus. Local parks, memorable buildings, historic architecture, and public art help bring the neighborhood’s spirit to the forefront. Bronzeville is the neighborhood’s historic name, dating back to the early 1900s. In the early 2000s, the area was renamed the King-Lincoln District to highlight the significance of the King Arts Complex and the Lincoln Theatre, both historic neighborhood institutions. Ultimately, though, the community decided to combine both names.

A variety of home styles off East Broad Street

The residential area of King-Lincoln Bronzeville sits to the north of East Broad Street. Running parallel to the streets are sidewalks and parked cars that sit in front of homes. American elm and oak trees are found dotted throughout modest front yards with minimal landscaping to pair. Homebuyers will find the neighborhood’s historical aspect reflected in the housing stock, as well, although new construction and townhouses are popping up. Built through the late 1890s and into the early 1900s, Victorian, American Foursquare and Craftsman bungalow styles are all common, as are brick facades. Those looking to purchase a home in the community can expect a price range from $180,000 for a three-bedroom home to $420,000 for a larger four-bedroom house.

Explore local dining along East Long Street

East Long Street is where many residents head for local dining and shopping. “Going through the area, you can see several new businesses that are preparing to open,” explains Flowers. Views of the Long Street Cultural Wall carry residents to Lincoln Cafe, a local restaurant known for its American-style breakfast. Sitting just two blocks east is Wave’s Bar & Kitchen, where happy hour and a pizza can be enjoyed. Those picking up groceries head to Kroger off East Main Street, a 2.2-mile drive southeast, while retail options are located at Town & Country Shopping Center, a 4.4-mile drive via OH-16.

Annual events at Mayme Moore Park

Neighbors have been gathering together each summer for two decades to celebrate the annual Heritage Music Festival held in Mayme Moore Park. Residents can enjoy free musical performances every Thursday in July and August. The park also hosts the Annual Our Food Trucks Festival, where local, black-owned food trucks gather at the park with music, artisans and musicians to support local businesses.

Community involvement at East High School

Young students will begin their journey at United Preparatory Academy, which is located in the neighborhood and has earned a D-plus from Niche. Older students will head to United Preparatory Academy before heading to East High School, both of which have received a C grade from Niche. Students of the high school can take part in the Health Science Academy, which aims to educate students about diseases that impact their lives, as well as promote participation through related school and community activities.

Parks within walking distance

After school, kids can stroll over to Beatty Community Center, which has a 3-acre park and tennis and basketball courts. Mayme Moore Park is a popular location for community gatherings and events. The 5-acre park is named after a local civil rights activist and features a gazebo, playground and picnic area.
