Merion Village, an historic community
Merion Village is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Columbus, with settlers from Great Britain and Nova Scotia arriving in the early 1800s. In 1809, entrepreneur William Merion saw an opportunity for Ohio farmers and acquired 1,800 acres near the local canals and developed a port of entry along the Scioto River to bring their goods to market. This area became a magnet for European immigrants, especially Germans, and Merion Village developed a thriving economy. Today, the village rests on that same 1,800 acres of land east of the Scioto River and still bears the Merion name. Most Merion Village homes were developed in the early 20th century. “Merion Village residents have central access to the downtown, a lot of restaurants and several private schools,” says Realtor Remington Lyman, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Reafco. “The area is relatively affordable compared to neighboring places like German Village, and it’s developed a lot in the last five years."

“The neighborhood has a strong community feel,” Lyman says. “The Merion Village Civic Association plays a big role in getting people involved with the community.” The Merion Village Art Walk showcases the town’s history, from its humble beginnings as an immigrant enclave to its industrial evolution. The annual Merion Village Festival features a variety of artists, crafters and food and drink vendors. The village has a green thumb reputation, making its annual garden tour a hit among residents. The event involves residents opening their gardens to visitors to trade gardening tips. The Merion Village Association holds monthly meetings to plan local events like the festival and garden tour. The association also keeps a record of the neighborhood's history. Just over a mile north of the neighborhood, German Village's annual Oktoberfest attracts thousands of visitors for its craft brews, German folk performances and its bratwurst. In the summer, folks catch new film releases at South Drive-In, less than 4 miles south of the neighborhood. The Actors’ Theatre of Columbus is located in Schiller Park. "People who own homes here have great pride in their properties and are very conscious of maintaining them," says Realtor Bruce Dooley, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Keller Williams Classic Properties. Homebuyers can purchase wood-exterior 1920s four squares for between $210,000 and $280,000. Craftsman-style houses from the 1930s are valued between $260,000 and $320,000. Two-story 1920s houses with Craftsman features sell for between $320,000 and $470,000. Newly built three-bedroom condos sell for between $440,000 and $730,000. Although most properties fall between $275,000 and $600,000 in price, there are several outliers. A 1910s Federal-influenced home with hardwood floors is valued at $775,000. Newly built spins on the old four squares sell for as high as $800,000. “A lot of new houses and commercial buildings are being developed,” Lyman says. There is no real community because most of us are renting we are not concerned with the community. They do have a block party once a year and there is a food bank close by that sends out community invitations every now and them.
