When homebuyers visit Reeb-Hosack/Hungarian Village, they’ll see turn-of-the-century houses alongside quiet suburban streets. Some homes have been renovated in recent years, but many still need refurbishment. “I think this is an up-and-coming neighborhood,” says Realtor Kelly Coate, who lives in Reeb-Hosack/Hungarian Village and sells homes there with Coldwell Banker Realty. “It’s a prime place for renovation and investors. My house has been revitalized, and the value has gone up 400% in the last three years.” The neighborhood has multiple local eateries and access to greenspaces. About 70% of residents own their homes.

Local restaurants and a grocery store
Multiple restaurants are within the neighborhood, especially along South High Street. Tio’s Diner serves authentic Mexican food. Lupita’s Mexican Cuisine attracts patrons with its enchiladas and happy hours. Eight & Sand Tavern & Refuge on South 4th Street is a hit for handheld sandwiches, loaded fries and draft beers. Locals eat from food trucks, drink Guinness and listen to live Irish folk music at Tara Hall on East Innis Avenue. There is a Kroger to the neighborhood’s north on South Washington Avenue.

“Most of them are single-family homes, but some are duplexes or apartment buildings,” Coate says. Homebuyers can purchase 1920s brick duplexes for between $140,000 and $200,000. Turn-of-the-century two-story homes with narrow alleyways separating them sell for between $190,000 and $270,000. Assessors value newly built single-family homes at between $270,000 and $320,000. Craftsman-style houses from the 1930s are valued at between $220,000 and $300,000. Residents on the east and west sides of the community experience noise from the roadways.

A nearby festival and college football
Half a mile north, the Merion Village Festival hosts artists, crafters and vendors. South Drive-In is 2 ½ miles south. Locals take acting classes and camps at the Actors’ Theatre of Columbus located in Schiller Park. Ohio State University’s football team faces off against other Big Ten Conference teams. Nationwide Arena, about 3 ½ miles north, hosts musicians like Jelly Roll and Bruce Springsteen.

The nonprofit offers job training and childcare services. It also has a lunch cafe. “It’s a magnificent place for the neighborhood,” Coate says. “They serve lunch every weekday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They also offer workforce development and job training.”
Lou Beliners Sports Complex is just minutes away from downtown Columbus, Ohio.

Getting around Columbus
Streets are lined with sidewalks, allowing residents to easily access the neighborhood’s dining options. John Glenn Columbus International Airport is 8-½ northeast via Interstate 670. Commuters take U.S. Route 23 about 3 miles north to Downtown Columbus. Coate says he’s lived in the inner city since 1982 and wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m very close to downtown and everything that goes on there,” he says. “The main roads and the freeways are accessible to get anywhere I need to go.” The Central Ohio Transit Authority operates bus stops along South 4th Street and Parsons Avenue.
