Discover the art and soul of Columbus in this buzzy social hub
Fans of city living with a helping of cultural enrichment will find plenty to love in the Short North. Over the last three decades, the area has transformed from a state of disrepair into one of central Columbus’s cultural centers, with a successful revitalization effort led by the city’s arts scene. With a bohemian atmosphere lined by galleries, nightclubs and murals, the neighborhood bills itself as ‘the art and soul of Columbus,’ and it’s not hard to see why. The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, High Street, is illuminated by metal arches overhead, in an homage to the city’s original wooden arches from the late 1800s. High Street welcomes crowds of attendees on the first Saturday of the month for the Gallery Hop, where new exhibitions, street performances and special events light up the neighborhood. The Ohio State University campus and Arena District are both less than 2 miles away, making the Short North a premium destination for college students, young professionals and the contemporary Columbus resident.
Fine dining and comfort food on High Street
During its revitalization period, the Short North’s vibrant arts scene attracted some of Columbus’s top restaurateurs, making High Street a prime destination for local foodies. The Lox Bagel Shop prepares bagels and bagel sandwiches with influences from the New York and Montreal styles of bagel, earning nods from Eater and Food and Wine Magazine. The Northstar Café is a local favorite for elevated American fare and cocktails, made with local and organic ingredients. Press Grill offers reliable comfort food in a laid-back sports bar setting, while Rooh serves Indian cuisine in a contemporary setting.
Immediately south of the neighborhood, North Market offers a mix of goods from more than 30 independent vendors, including groceries, international fare and handcrafted gifts. For everyday food needs, Kroger is a quarter mile north of the neighborhood in nearby Dennison Place. Residents can also enjoy a mix of dining chains along High Street, from Shake Shack and Chipotle to White Castle and the first Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams store.
