South of Main, also known as “SoMain,” is a residential neighborhood 3 miles east of downtown Columbus with a mix of housing types and easy access to city attractions. It is home to a rich history and quiet streets where neighbors are known to be both kind and helpful. South of Main provides its residents with convenient trips for nearby amenities, as well as local parks to attend a variety of events. “It's a tight-knit community where people are nice and work hard,” says Suzanne Flowers, an agent with Key Realty and native of Columbus.

The neighborhood is one of several in the Near East Side that have seen a revival over the last decade. ”It's an up-and-coming neighborhood,” says Flowers. “Though many older generations still live in the community, new home sales are welcoming younger generations as well.” South of Main features a variety of spacious, single-family homes built in the early 20th century, including ornate American Foursquares, Craftsman bungalows and Victorian-style houses, many of which feature front porches. Sitting in front of each are neat front yards with modest landscaping and established sidewalks that lead to cars parked along the residential streets. Those looking to purchase a home in the neighborhood can expect a price range from $200,000 for a two-bedroom home to $445,000 for a larger five-bedroom house.

Local eats along East Main Street
Bordering the community to the north is East Main Street, which is home to several local eateries, including B&K Smoke House, a counter service spot known for its smoked brisket and mac and cheese. Sitting just nine blocks away is the popular Chicago Fish and Chicken, where residents can fuel up before picking up groceries less than a mile away at the nearby Kroger. Those looking to retail shop head to Town & Country Shopping Center, which is located a 3.8-mile drive via OH-16.

Annual traditions at Mayme Moore Park

Health Science Academy at East High
Students attending school in the area can start their journey at Ohio Avenue Elementary School, which has earned a D-plus on Niche. Older students can head to Champion Middle School before heading to East High School, both of which have received a C from Niche. The trails of Hanford Village Park
Residents can get some fresh air at Hanford Village Park, a 2-acre green space toward the east with a playground and shelter that’s perfect for a mid-day picnic. From Hanford Village Park, visitors can hop on the scenic Alum Creek Greenway Trail, a 22-mile pathway that twists and turns through much of eastern Columbus. Less than a mile north sits 75 acres of green space at Franklin Park, which is accessible to the public without admission and includes walking paths, waterways and playgrounds.
Commuting from South of Main
There are bus stops located along East Main Street provided by COTA, which carries riders to surrounding areas. Those commuting downtown can do so along a 2-mile commute, while classes at The Ohio State University 6.6 miles north can be accessed via I-70 West. Those traveling by air can reach John Glenn Columbus International Airport along I-670 East via a short 5-mile drive. Sitting even closer to home, a mile drive north, is Ohio State East Hospital, making for speedy trips for patients living in the community.
Nationwide Children's Hospital is located only one mile away from the South of Main neighborhood.
