A polished suburb in northwestern Columbus
Set northwest of Clintonville, the planned community of Sycamore Hills prides itself on its tight-knit civic bonds and a sense of peace and quiet. For that reason, it's particularly popular with retirees and older couples. “As soon as our kids were out of school, we all moved to Sycamore Hills. It’s a great community,” says Phil Crawford, Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. Suburban conveniences like a dedicated dog park, multiple retail areas and classically-inspired homes make Sycamore Hills an attractive neighborhood for many homebuyers.
Split-level and ranch-style homes
Made up of three main loops, the tree-lined streets of Sycamore Hills have narrow sidewalks that connect the neighborhood. The area’s updated mid-century ranch and two-story houses are popular with buyers—homes rarely go on the market and sell within 15 days on average when they do. Brick and vinyl façades are common, and some properties integrate Tudor-style influences. Prices range from the low $300,000s to the high $400,000s.
High school athletics and an acclaimed children's choir
Gables Elementary School receives a C grade from Niche, while Ridgeview Middle School has a C-minus. The B-ranked Centennial High School holds a multicultural festival each year and offers over 20 athletic programs. Local children can join the Columbus International Children’s Choir, one of the ensembles at the Columbus Music and Art Academy, which offers classes on Saturdays. The choir performed for former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama at the White House in 2015.
Korean barbeque, Kroger and refined French dining
Near the southern edge of the neighborhood, Gogi Korean BBQ has a casual assortment of grill-it-yourself meats and unique starters like the kimchi pancake. Next door, The Refectory offers a French-inspired fine dining experience with caviar and an extensive wine list. Kroger is 2 miles west, past a cluster of international grocers, including the Istanbul Supermarket, the Oriental Market and Mediterranean Food Imports. Just southeast of Sycamore Hills is Olentangy Plaza, which has several retail options, including Marshalls and Micro Center.
Green space and pools within the neighborhood
Set in the neighborhood's center, Sycamore Park has 8 acres of manicured green space, with a playground and basketball courts. The Sycamore Hills Swim Club is a hub for the neighborhood, hosting summer events and swimming classes at its two pools. Just north is Godown Park, which lets pet owners take their dogs off the leash in a 10-acre sanctuary.
A 12-mile commute to downtown Columbus
Highway access on Bethel Road gives residents a straightforward route to greater and downtown Columbus, 12 miles south. Residents will likely need to rely on a car to travel, as the area’s residential focus means access to Central Ohio Transit Authority bus stops is limited. Flights from the Columbus area leave from John Glenn Columbus International Airport, 15 miles east. The nearest hospital, OhioHealth Riverside Memorial Hospital, is 5 miles south.
Important to know
Locals living in the Sycamore Hills area may experience air traffic noise at undisclosed hours because of the neighborhood’s proximity to The Ohio State University Airport, 2 miles west. The airport handles private flights and facilitates departures and arrivals for small aircraft and freight.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
