Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio
Franklin County 43232
On the southeast side of Columbus, near the intersection of Interstates 270 and 70, is a collection of homes that were built primarily in the 1960s and 1970s that are modest in size. “It’s been a solid community ever since it was built in the 1960s,” says Tom Knecht, broker and owner with RE/MAX Apex. “From the start, that neighborhood has been a good place for first-time homebuyers. That continues today.”
Ranch-style and three and four-level split homes are the main architectural styles. “The ranch-style homes may be under 1,000 square feet, and the split levels give you a little bit more room at around 1,300,” Knecht says. “The homes in this part of the neighborhood are well-built and stand the test of time.” The price range of the older homes is between $175,000 and $225,000. The typical home will have three bedrooms, one bathroom, and at least a partial basement. Newer homes are in the eastern part of the neighborhood, toward Brice Road. Some homes built in 2023 are two-story contemporary with over 2,000 square feet of space. They run between $350,000 and $400,000.
From big to small, there’s lots of opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in parks in Walnut Heights. The 165-acre Nafzger Park runs along Big Walnut Creek at the corner of Noe Bixby and Refugee Roads. It’s a popular place for organized soccer leagues to have games on the weekend. There’s a parking lot off Noe Bixby Road with a basketball court and soccer fields visible from the lot. The playground is close to a parking lot off Refugee Road. The paved pathway around the park's perimeter is a great place to exercise. Knecht, who grew up in Walnut Heights, says community football games used to happen at Maybury Park. The over five acres contain a non-lighted baseball diamond and soccer field. A small playground is accessible via a paved path that starts at the park’s entrance on Linodra Drive.
All that activity could make you hungry, and Little Sicily’s Pizza on Brice Road has been feeding the community since 1975. The dough is made from scratch; if you opt for lasagna, that’s also homemade. Catching The Ohio State Buckeyes or Columbus Blue Jackets is an option with four large flat-screen TVs and one medium. If the weather allows, their spacious patio would be a great place to enjoy a meal outside. If it’s Greek food you’re craving, check My Big Fat Gyro on Chatterton Road. It’s a small place at the forefront of a shopping center with a Dollar General, and folks who swear by it say it’s a hidden gem. The super-sized lamb gyro alone gives credibility to the restaurant’s name. Be sure to get Greek Fries and Baklava for dessert.
Two schools within the Columbus City School District are in Walnut Heights. Liberty Elementary School has over 500 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. Nearby Liberty Elementary is Independence High School, where the student-to-teacher ratio is 17-to-1, according to the Niche website. The athletic teams at the high school are nicknamed the 76ers. Students in Walnut Heights also attend Yorktown Middle School, which has a 17-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio.
The proximity to freeways is another attractive quality of living in Walnut Heights. “Around the neighborhood, there are roads that can take you to main roads that will take you anywhere around Columbus,” Knecht says. “It’s a nice suburban area where I can still reach all of Columbus quickly from different directions.”
