Suburban Neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio
Franklin County 43068, 43232
The Walnut Hills community is located east of Columbus at the intersection of Interstates 270 and 70. Once home to an 18-hole golf course, the area has retained its character since the course closed 10 years ago. There are still well-built, attractive homes. “If somebody didn’t know anything about this area, affordability would be top of mind,” says Mark Abbott, Realtor with Abbott Realty. “This area is very reasonably priced for being close to downtown.”
In Walnut Hills, you’ll find spacious homes from 1500 to 2500 square feet, with some that are over 3000. Houses date back to the 1960s and ‘70s and are primarily two-story traditional and split-level. “The area is mixed-use with single-family homes, and there are also duplexes along Saranac Drive,” Abbott says. The duplexes tend to be in the $300,000 to $400,000 range and have between two and three bedrooms for each unit. Single-family homes generally run from $250,000 to $350,000. “That price range makes it a great opportunity for a first-time homebuyer,” he says. “The typical home would have about three or four bedrooms.”
Until 2013, this neighborhood was home to the Walnut Hill Golf Course, with stately homes that backed up to the course. These days, the houses are still impressive, but they back up to what is now the Walnut Hill Disc Golf Course. It’s still 18 holes, but instead of golfers hitting a ball off a tee, people throw a disc at a target. The rules are similar to golf, but instead of the end game of sinking the ball into a hole on the putting green, discs are thrown at a target, which is a basket. The number of throws it takes to get to the basket is tallied, just like in golf with the number of strokes. The entrance to the park is off Saranac Drive; at the end of the small entrance road, there’s a parking area, a small playground and a shelter house ready for a picnic lunch spread.
For recreational activities indoors, the Urban Air Adventure Park on Livingston Avenue is the ultimate indoor playground for the kids and the entire family. The Sky Rider is a zip line-like experience that will give you a bird’s eye view of the facility to scope out your next adventure. You can learn the ropes by tackling the ropes course that will have you climbing and swinging as you look to complete your mission. Everything is done in the name of safety, as kids are secured in a harness. Harnesses are also part of the climbing wall challenge. It’s a great way to build strength, agility and confidence.
For those who like a slower pace and a trip back in time, the 53,000-square-foot Heritage Square Antique Mall may be more your pace. This is Central Ohio’s largest antique mall, filled with showrooms of vintage items. You’re sure to find something that you don’t see every day. Come back often because the items in the showroom change daily. If you find an item that is not marked “Firm,” you can negotiate on the price of items over $80.
Oakmont Elementary School is on Oakmont Drive and is part of the Columbus City School District. Just over 300 students are enrolled here in kindergarten through fifth grade. Niche says that Yorktown Middle School has an excellent student-to-teacher ratio of 15-to-1. Niche says Independence High School has an 18-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio.
The transportation options are numerous in Walnut Hills. There are several stops along Livingston Avenue where the COTA, or Central Ohio Transit Authority, buses can pick you up and take you where you need to go. “For those who don’t like to travel on the interstate, you’ve got Livingston Avenue, along with Main and Broad Streets, that can take you downtown and further west,” says Harold Gibson, Realtor with Coldwell Banker. “Really, how can you miss?”
