Suburban streets border acres of farmland

Sandwiched between open farmland to the west and Ohio’s capital city to the east, Wexford-Thornapple is a suburban neighborhood with proud rural roots. “That area has maintained its beauty. There are mature trees, and that’s not something you see everywhere in the Columbus area since it’s such a young community,” says Realtor Tara Bebinger, a Wexford-Thornapple resident and Consultant with Keller Williams. “I feel confident when I sell to buyers because there’s a solid history here. It’s a great place to raise a family or start home ownership,” she adds. As its hyphenated name suggests, Wexford-Thornapple is often characterized as two neighborhoods wrapped up in one. Located north of Feder Road is Wexford Green, where homes are generally listed at lower price points than in Thornapple to the south. “I’ve been selling for 20 years, and I find when it’s time for people to upgrade their homes in Wexford Green, they’ll just move to Thornapple,” explains Bebinger, adding, “That tells you something about the community.” In other words, people here stick close to home. About 10 miles east along Interstate 70 (past chains like Cracker Barrel, Walmart and AMC) is the larger city of Columbus, where Wexford-Thornapple residents can access convention centers, art museums and a metropolitan airport — really, any type of urban convenience imaginable.

Colonial-revival homes with well-maintained lawns

In Wexford-Thornapple, prospective buyers will find traditional and Colonial-revival homes. Most are between 20 and 30 years old with two-car garages and well-kept lawns. Prices generally fall between $250,000 and $500,000, and some lot sizes are ? acre or larger, enough room for backyard games of catch and flower gardens. “It’s a great place to raise a family or start home ownership,” says Bebinger. Townhomes sell for between $150,000 and $250,000 depending on bedroom count, and, in some communities, streets wind around man-made ponds.

A student-run newspaper and active theater department at Hilliard Bradley High

Depending on their Wexford-Thornapple address, students can attend public schools in the Columbus City District or Hilliard City District. Within the Hilliard District, Alton Darby Elementary, Hilliard Station Sixth Grade Elementary, Hilliard Memorial Middle and Hilliard Bradley High all received a B or higher from the educational review site, Niche. Bradley’s student-run newspaper, The Jaguar Times, reports on school news, local events, and arts and culture. Buy tickets to watch the Bradley Theater Department's annual musical in their 1000-seat performing arts center.

Ice cream, cornhole and bix-box retailers up Hilliard Rome Road

“The neighborhood’s great because you feel like you’re getting away from all the crowds, but you’re also five minutes away from shopping and dining,” says Bebinger, adding, "Everything you would want and need is within reach.” Handels Homemade Ice Cream on Feder Road has a recipe that was perfected in the 1940s and, today, over 100 flavors to choose from. Or head to Mugsy’s Pub and Patio for a game of cornhole and a classic dive bar menu. According to Bebinger, the home improvement store Menards created quite a stir when it set up shop off Hilliard Rome Road in 2020. “That store is normally closer to a downtown area, so it was really exciting that it came to the neighborhood.” Drive further north to find Tanglewood Plaza, home to national retailers like Sam’s Club, Target and Meijer for grocery needs.

Casinos, fresh produce and free museum days

The neighborhood is less than 5 miles from Hollywood Casino Columbus, which first opened its doors in 2012. It has a 36-table poker room and entertainment venue that hosts big-name bands and comedians. Stop by the Sunset Patio every Friday and Saturday night (except during the chilly winter season) to listen to local musicians perform live. On rainy days, drive up Hilliard Rome Road to Tanglewood Plaza to watch a movie at AMC. Of course, there are always more opportunities in Columbus just 10 miles away. Shop for local produce and flowers at North Market, which is nearly 150 years old and home to 30 small businesses. The Columbus Museum of Art is free on Sundays, and the Ohio Theater, once a 1920s movie house, now hosts touring Broadway musicals and symphony concerts.

Fifteen miles from Wexford-Thornapple along I-70 and Interstate 670 is the John Glenn Columbus International Airport, which offers direct flights to over 30 destinations. Although public bus routes don’t run directly through the neighborhood’s quiet residential streets, residents can catch the COTA (Central Ohio Transit Agency) along major thoroughfares like Hilliard Road or in Tanglewood Plaza — ultimately, it’s necessary to have a car in these parts. The OhioHealth Doctors Hospital and Emergency is just about 3 miles away for most locals. Not only is it a premier osteopathic teaching institution, but it’s also known for treating emergency heart conditions.
