Pine Junction Area, a mountain home community outside the Denver metro
The wind whistles through the thick forests of Pine Junction Area, a neighborhood located west of Denver in the foothills. “It is in a rural area, but it's commutable to Denver, so for many people, it can be a bedroom community. But, many people have second homes here because it's very much in the mountains,” says broker Karen Heydman with Keller Williams Foothills, who has nine years of experience. “It's amazing how community-oriented we are. Pretty much everyone has at least an acre, and we're spread out, but we are super community-minded.”
Hiking trails, fishing and elk-viewing opportunities
Pine Valley Ranch Park has a lake that is popular for fishing and skating in the winter when the lake develops a thick ice layer. The Buck Gulch Trail totals nearly 6 miles and runs from the park through the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area. Pine trees dot Staunton State Park’s almost 4,000 acres, part of which is in Pine Junction Area’s northern region, with 37 miles of trails and various fishing ponds. “You can work as hard as you want. There are nice flat trails, but then there's also hiking straight uphill to waterfall trails; they're just gorgeous. You see lots of deer, elk and foxes,” Heydman says. “There is a giant elk migration that runs through the Bailey-Pine area every fall and spring—and we're talking like hundreds of elk just passing through—it's amazing. We get moose, deer, mountain lions, so keep your cat inside.”
Mountain homes above and below a million dollars
Properties at the ends of windy mountain roads feature log cabins and contemporary mountain homes. Many of these lots span up to 5 acres, while those with Craftsman-influenced mountain homes may go beyond 20 acres. Log cabin prices range between $190,000 and $495,000, while contemporary mountain homes go from $645,000 to $1.2 million. Depending on property size, mountain estates may list between $1.2 million and $4.5 million.
Shops and restaurants on US-285, with grocers in Conifer
Shopping and dining options are scarce; however, U.S. Highway 285 connects it to Conifer, which has a Safeway and Natural Grocers. Pine County Feed & Pet Supply and the family owned Pine Junction Country Store are also on US-285. Locally owned restaurants include Coffee Bean N Bakery. “[Their] cinnamon rolls are just ridiculously good. They’re not mega-size; they’re like the size of your hand. I think it’s because the dough is flaky, and [the] cream cheese frosting has just a hint of orange,” Heydman says. “We also have Crossroads Pub & Grill, and on the weekends, we get a lot of motorcycle traffic through the area because they'll come up 285, but they’ll all stop at Crossroads for lunch, so all the bikes are out in front.”
School choice in Jeffco, neighborhood schools and CTE courses
Several schools in the Jeffco Public Schools district are zoned for the Pine Junction Area, though students can enroll in other district schools if there is space. Niche gives the neighborhood school Elk Creek Elementary a B-plus grade. West Jefferson Middle School and Conifer High School are also zoned for the Pine Junction Area; both schools earn A-minuses. Junior and senior students may enroll in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, including personal finance and computer-aided drawing.
Windy roads to U.S. Highway 285 and emergency preparedness
Although there are many windy side roads, U.S. Highway 285 is a less curvy route through Pine Junction, connecting the community to Conifer in just over 5 miles and Denver in about 45 miles. “It's basically a canyon through the foothills of the mountains, so everybody's kind of along the highway. It's rare that [the highway] gets shut down, although the traction law will be enacted if there’s a big enough storm,” Heydman says. “I was already living here, but when I decided to live and work in the same area, [my] little Mini didn't work for hauling people around. The next came in an all-wheel drive model; suddenly, I could go anywhere if I put good snow tires on. I will go four-wheeling in that vehicle, so you need to equip yourself, and you'll get along just fine.” Although the community is slightly isolated, emergency services, such as fire stations, are nearby. This region, which has an elevated wildfire risk, is served by the Elk Creek Fire Protection District.
