A fast-growing city with new construction communities just outside of San Antonio
Converse is the second-largest city in Bexar County, brimming with open land opportunities and set in a relatively peaceful Central Texas landscape just 15 miles northeast of bustling San Antonio. With Randolph Air Force residing on the outskirts, Converse’s strong military ties create a diverse community that offers a great quality of life for all types of families and residents. "We have a mixed bag of people coming in," says Mike Boyd, a Realtor with Vylla Homes and Converse resident. "Half are military clients because we are so close to the base, the other half are regular civilians."
The city’s beautiful public park system, steady housing market with expansive new construction possibilities and convenient travel access to big metro destinations like Austin and Houston have helped Converse grow rapidly from a population of 18,000 in 2017 to now well over 30,000.

A multitude of Tex-Mex options and an upcoming lifestyle center
Converse offers its residents multiple dining and shopping areas throughout the city. South Seguin Road is one of the biggest hubs, with several authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants. Along the intersections of South Seguin Road and Farm to Market Road 78, there are authentic taco joints, along with a few Asian restaurants and numerous classic fast-food stops. The Walmart Supercenter on Farm To Market Rd 78 is the main grocery shopping destination, however, residents can also drive less than 3 miles north to the popular H-E-B in Universal City. The Judson Market shopping center on Crestway Drive houses local and nationally known shops for specialty items and everyday essentials, along with a few eateries.
For more trendy shopping and dining, the popular Forum at Olympia Parkway is one of the largest shopping centers in the San Antonio area and is located about 7 miles out in Selma. The city of Converse is currently working to develop a more upscale, multi-purpose commercial center with the approved Sante 51 project. This new 51-acre development will include hotels, restaurants, a city center green space, plus retail, office and commercial spaces. The hope is to turn Sante 51 into the city’s main lifestyle destination, rather than a standard outdoor shopping center.

Outdoor exercise and athletic offerings at Converse North Park
At the community center, Converse City Park features a popular swimming pool, a fitness court and a small pond for catch-and-release fishing. Converse North Park on Spring Town Street is set along a reservoir and is another go-to for anglers. Many children take part in sports leagues or extracurricular activities. "My grandson plays with the Judson Rockets, a local junior league. He fell in love with it. They play at different parks around the city," Boyd says.
Nearby, the Alamo City All-Stars Sportsplex also provides a variety of youth sports leagues. Converse is home to Hidden Springs Youth Ranch, a faith-based organization that connects kids with horses through mentorship and outdoor programs. Opening in 2021, The Converse Senior Center hosts karaoke nights, movie events and fitness programs.

In-town community events and nearby cultural offerings
While Converse is more known for its residential offerings, locals can enjoy all the vast entertainment possibilities in nearby San Antonio. Only 11 miles out, locals can head to The Frost Bank Center in downtown San Antonio to cheer on the area’s favorite NBA team, the San Antonio Spurs or see a live musical performance from huge national acts. Converse is also 15 miles from downtown San Antonio, with destinations like the Riverwalk, featuring numerous shops, restaurants and many museums.
Residents don’t have to travel out of Converse’s city limits, however, to take part in community events. Converse holds seasonal gatherings throughout the year, including the Trunk or Treat and Movie in the Park event at Converse North Park each October. The Great Texas Airshow is held annually in April at JBSA-Randolph, featuring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. "You don't even have to leave the city during the show," Boyd says. "They fly right over the neighborhood, and last year, a bunch of people watched from their roofs." There’s also the annual Converse Goes Green Day event, which takes place outside of the D.W. Rutledge Stadium. Residents come together for sustainable living workshops and demonstrations, recycle their old electronics, grab some free plants and enjoy food trucks, door prizes and games for children throughout the day.
Steady housing market and neighborhood developments
Converse’s housing market prices are on track with most areas around San Antonio, with a median housing price of around $270,000. Single-family homes, which are most often ranch styles or new traditional Craftsmans, make up the bulk of the city’s properties. Brick ranch-style homes and cottages with two-car garages, shaded by large red oaks, sit close to their neighbors. "We know our neighbors, and everyone is so friendly. Now and then, they get together for barbecues," Boyd says.
Copperfield is a notable subdivision featuring New Traditional and Contemporary Craftsman homes with stone facades. Santa Clara is another standout community with new houses in neutral hues with board and batten siding.

Strong athletics programs and dual language learning
Converse is served by the East Central Independent School District and the Judson Independent School District. East Central ISD receives a C-plus rating from Niche, while the Judson ISD School District gets a B rating.
Judson ISD is the larger of the two districts, with 32 schools and over 24,000 students. Judson High School offers a variety of electives, including animal sciences, digital communications and engineering programs. The school's Judson Rocket football team holds the state record for most consecutive wins from 1977 to 2023. "High school sports are huge here. Most people rally to support the schools during events or fundraisers," Boyd says.
The East Central ISD offers some special programs, such as a Dual Language Academy and Pecan Valley STEM Academy for Prekindergarten through Grade 5. For high school, the district offers a P-TECH program, a specialized curriculum for upper-level students focusing on the health and sciences.

Direct access to multiple main highways
One of the biggest draws to Converse is its location for multiple highway accessibility. Interstate 35 runs through the city, giving direct access into downtown San Antonio for leisurely or commuting purposes. Interstate 10 runs directly west of the city, flowing into nearby Live Oak and Adkins, both convenient destinations within the San Antonio sphere. Converse also sits 16 miles east of the San Antonio International Airport, and the prominent Methodist Hospital Northeast is a 4-mile drive west. VIA Metropolitan Transit offers a designated Converse/Kirby bus route with in-town stops and connections into San Antonio.
Lower-than-average crime rates and high heat levels
According to 2022 FBI data, Converse's property and violent crime rates were lower than the national figures. The Texas Department of Public Safety's statistics reflect a 12% decrease in the city's index crime rates between 2022 and 2023.
Converse also experiences a climate less prone to possible hurricanes or tornados than other areas in Central Texas. However, there is a severe risk of excessive heat in Converse.
