About Country Club Hills, IL

About Country Club Hills, IL

An evolving suburb with fixer upper properties

Country Club Hills took off in the late 50s, and it stands out as a place to hunt for midcentury housing stock. “It’s a good [community] where you can buy a pretty decent house, move in, fix it up and make it your own,” says Margaret Banks, a managing broker with Home Sellers Realty. But this suburban community has a new vision for growth, which kicked off in 2006 with a new amphitheater, fire station and a rehabilitated centrally located park. Big retail shops and small locally owned eateries have filled out the commercial corridors – the town has even attracted the largest Walmart Supercenter in the Chicago area. With direct access to Interstate 80, too, this is also a commuter haven that’s about 25 miles south of downtown.

Split-levels and ranches starting at $150k

The roomy residential streets here are typically suburban, with long strips of grass tracking past ever-present sidewalks. Oak and plum trees line the way, with ornamental shrubs hugging the perimeter of houses. Streetlights are common, and so are attached garages, especially if they show up on a split-level home. Prices range from $150,000 to $300,000. Besides split-level homes, brick ranches are another popular style here. Midcentury colorways are strongly represented, with a lot of tans, pale yellows and off whites.

For more dining and dancing, residents can head to BR Bar, which has American eats, such as steak, wings and burgers. Those who like to play pool or casino-style gaming machines also enjoy this location. Ya Mon Jamaican Cuisine and Irie Jerk Hut are Jamaican spots with traditional menu items like curry goat, oxtails and plantains. For shopping, strip malls such as Country Club Hills Plaza, Shops at Coopers Grove and Heritage Plaza provide necessities such as salons, pharmacies and grocers. For major retail shopping, many residents go to Matteson, which has legacy brands like JC Penney and Marshalls. “You don’t necessarily have to go 30 miles into the city to shop or for restaurants,” says Banks. “There is a lot offered, right there in town.”

A lively amphitheater

During the summer, residents can transfer their dancing from the indoors to the outdoors. “They have a huge festival at the outdoor theatre,” says Banks. “Even The Dazz Band played there one summer.” Banks is referring to the Country Club Hills Amphitheater which hosts comedy shows and productions such as The Motown Revue. From June to September, the stage is booked with a star-studded lineup called the Summer Concert Series, hosted by local radio personality Lady Red. For more community interaction year-round, Country Club Hills Recreation Center provides classes such as boxing and aerobics for adults and ballet, tumbling and art for children.

Easy interstate access

Interstate 80 runs east-west through the city, right over Community Park. Commuters can also make use of Interstate 57, the major north-south corridor. The two interstates intersect on the community's west end. Cicero Avenue and Pulaski Road are north-south lanes that extend straight into Chicago, and these are where residents will find restaurants and other small businesses, like pet supply stores. Buses run along 183rd Street, which intersects with these two retail strips.
