Suburbs next to popular Garden City Center shopping
Garden City is a relatively quiet suburb that sports all the amenities one might expect to find in a city: a school, a library, major highways and the Providence area’s premiere outdoor shopping mall. Serena Gendron, team manager of the Hajdaraj Group, points out that access to commercial amenities is key to understanding Garden City’s appeal. “Garden City is obviously super close to Garden City Center, and you have awesome amenities over there,” she says. “It is a little more expensive because of that.” Homes are less than a mile from name-brand retailers and eateries that range from date night material to counter service chains. “I don’t even live there anymore, but we still frequent Garden City Center for all the great restaurants,” says Bruce Lane, a former resident and team lead of the Lane Ceceri Group.

Midcentury ranch-style homes along curving roads
The winding streets of Garden City might have been considered innovative when they were rolled out after World War II. Typically, mill villages in the area followed a tidy grid pattern, but developers sought to blend a modest residential lifestyle with retail centers that homeowners could easily drive to. That vision stands up today, with homes on quarter-acre lots less than a mile from a bustling outdoor mall. “In Garden City, you get a little more land than in the surrounding neighborhoods,” Lane says. “It’s also almost all single-family homes, though there’s a strong market for rentals.” Ranch-style homes with attached garages from the 1950s are the dominant home style, with some quaint Cape Cods and later split-level or bi-level homes scattered throughout. Mature trees dot the grassy lawns, framed by telephone poles and short setbacks. Prices start at just below $300,000 and can climb to nearly $650,000.

Garden City Center is an upscale shopping mecca
Garden City Center is the Providence area’s only upscale outdoor mall, featuring big-name retailers and popular dining spots around a central green. “I’d call it Providence’s premiere mall,” Lane says. “The other big malls in the area aren’t outdoor experiences like Garden City is. People go there every day just to walk their dogs.” Although the shopping center is best known for its clothing, furniture and cosmetics brands such as Anthropologie, Pottery Barn and Ulta, it also holds events such as a summer concert series where folks lay out their blankets and chairs in front of the gazebo. Some shops host recurring events of their own, including a Lululemon run club and crafty workshops at Kaffeology, a modern brunch spot. Dining ranges from casual to upscale, with a raw bar at Legal Sea Foods and piled-high burgers at Tavern in the Square, and there are even more options along Pontiac Avenue. Brewed Awakenings is a local coffee chain that’s impossible to miss, thanks to the giant coffee cup soaring from the roof. Topgolf sits along Rhode Island Route 37, near supermarket chains such as Whole Foods Market, Shaw’s and Aldi.

This secluded waterfront has a public boat launch on Winter Street, plus attached green space with a playground and softball fields on Aqueduct Road. For a more robust park-going experience, Roger Williams Park is a short drive northeast and is well-known for its elaborate gardens and zoo. The central branch of the Cranston Public Library is right across Sockanosset Cross Road from the neighborhood and provides daily programming for kids and adults alike, including arts and crafts, story times and technology lessons. The library is open every day of the week, with limited hours on Sundays, making it a convenient study spot or rainy-day retreat.
