Cresson is a hotspot for train enthusiasts

Cresson is a small, rural Cambria County borough situated in the Allegheny Mountains. In 1881, the Mountainhouse Hotel opened next to the nearby Pennsylvania Railroad station with the hope of attracting Pittsburgh and Johnstown residents looking for a getaway destination. The hotel was demolished in 1916 and development in the area slowed down. Today, the population is just over 1,500 people and a different hotel makes the area notable. The Station Inn, which opened in 1993, is a railroad-themed bed and breakfast that attracts train enthusiasts. The hotel sits along Norfolk Southern’s triple track Pittsburgh line, which sees as many as 60 trains go by each day. “People come from all over the country to sit on the big porch and watch the trains,” says Lisa Hess, a Realtor with Lang Real Estate, who’s been selling homes in the area for nearly a decade. Cresson’s small-town vibes and secluded nature attract homebuyers looking for a more private community close to major cities and highways. “It’s a great town to live in, everything you need is right here,” says Hess.

Ranch-style homes starting in the $100,000s

Homes in central Cresson are arranged on gridded streets with smaller yards, while houses on the outskirts of town are spaced apart with lot sizes going up to 60 acres. The area primarily features two- to three-bedroom ranch-style and colonial homes built between the 1920s and 1970s. Homes away from the town’s center are set farther back from the road with long driveways, while many homes close to Cresson’s center rely on street parking. Central Cresson homes typically sell for $100,000 to $200,000, while houses on the outskirts go for $150,000 to $300,000. There are also a few two-bedroom townhouses in the area that range from $50,000 to $75,000. “The home prices are comparable to the surrounding area, but the taxes are less,” adds Hess. The CAP Index gives Cresson a crime score of 3 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

Shopping and dining along Admiral Peary Highway

Along Admiral Peary Highway, Cresson Springs is a local staple that’s been serving breakfast and American classics in the borough since 1985. “Their pies are to die for, it’s all homemade food,” says Hess. There’s also a Shop ‘n Save and a Rite Aid for the essentials. Further north up Front Street, locals can also eat at Vito’s, which offers pizza and other Italian dishes. Residents can find additional shopping 11 miles north in Altoona.
