About Crown Point, IN

Small-town community meets location convenience in the seat of Lake County

Crown Point is the longtime seat of Lake County, and many of its city offices conduct business within the “Grand Old Lady:” a historic, red-bricked courthouse built in 1878. The surrounding walkable downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places, while new housing developments continue to break ground each year. A brand-new Amazon Fulfillment Center joins the industry popping up along Interstate 65, which runs north-south on the city’s east side. A branch of the Franciscan Health hospital system and a highly rated school district are also major employers, though the city’s northwest Indiana location lends itself to Chicago commuters.

Crown Point's historic hub and new developments

Crown Point’s development history is shown through its outward sprawl. “There’s an entire historic district right by the town square with 100-year-old plus homes for rehabbing,” says Susan Mender, a broker with Listing leaders MVP Team who taught math at Crown Point High School for 14 years. “Then we have new construction on the outskirts and anything in between.” Streets of midcentury homes and infill neighborhoods from the early 2000s are farther from the center, while the newest subdivisions back up to forests or corn fields. The median sales price in Crown Point is $355,000, below the national average but higher compared to neighboring communities like Merrillville and Schererville. Violent and property crime rates in Crown Point remained well below the state and national averages in 2023, according to FBI statistics.

Commuting to Chicago or throughout Northwest Indiana

State routes leading to Merrillville and St. John intersect close to downtown, though many residents can drive to their town center just using residential streets. “We have close proximity to Chicago, so you can still live in Crown Point and commute,” Mender says. Interstate 65 connects to South Shore Line Metra stops or Indiana Dunes National Park. Those driving 48 miles into the Windy City start on I-65 and cross the state line on the Indiana Toll Road.

Public and private schools in Crown Point

Most students are zoned for Crown Point Community School Corporation, save for some on the outskirts zoned for schools in Merrillville or St. John. The Crown Point district scores an A on Niche and comprises seven neighborhood elementary schools, two middle schools and Crown Point High School. “People really do love the schools, there’s a really strong hometown-y feel to it,” Mender says. “At Friday football games you can hardly find a seat.” Crown Point is also home to private, faith-based schools for prekindergarten through eighth grade, like Trinity Lutheran Church and School, St. Mary Catholic Community School or Indiana Horizon Academy at Northwest Indiana Islamic Center.

Bulldog Park afternoons or games at Crown Point Sports Complex

Crown Point Parks & Recreation maintains community spaces for all four seasons, from hot, humid summers to winter temperatures below freezing. Bulldog Park anchors downtown with an amphitheater, a splash pad and an ice-skating rink with skate rentals. Crown Point Youth Baseball plays Little League games at Jerry Ross Park, while kids ages five through 12 compete in six divisions in spring and fall leagues. Many other sports programs utilize the multipurpose natural and turf fields at Crown Point Sportsplex off I-65 or the climate-controlled Sparta Dome next door. White Hawk Country Club on the northwest side includes public golf, and paved trails wind around a playground, shelters and fishing spots across 403 acres at Lemon Lake County Park to the southwest.

Crown Point’s historic, walkable town center and grocery options

Along with government offices, the downtown historic courthouse now houses shops, restaurants and a historic event venue. Throughout the walkable Crown Point Courthouse Square Historic District, beloved restaurants mix with city resources like the library and fire department. Grocers like Jewel-Osco, Aldi and Strack & Van Til are also in Crown Point, in shopping strips alongside chain restaurants. “We’ve got your Chipotle and everything, but for Target and other big-box stores you’ll have to head up to Merrillville, which is just 10 to 15 minutes away,” says Sarah Verpooten, Crown Point resident and fellow broker with Listing leaders MVP Team. This nearby hub also offers two floors of indoor shopping at Southlake Mall.

Historic tours, Taste of Crown Point and the Lake County Fair

The Lake County Historical Museum hosts tours from May to October on the second floor of the historic courthouse. Haunted tours take place down the street at the Old Lake County Jail and Sheriff's House, where Great Depression-era gangster John Dillinger made his famous escape in 1934. Folks lay picnic blankets to watch local acts perform at Bulldog Park’s Franciscan Health Amphitheater and catch the Taste of Crown Point every July for booths from local restaurants, beer and live music. Crown Point is also home to the Lake County Fairgrounds, where one of the largest county fairs in the state kicks off August with 4H Club animal displays, carnival rides and games.
