Park West neighborhood feels like a small New England-esque town in the middle of Culver City thrills. Neighbors here go all out for Halloween and walk together to school sporting events or festivals in their historic park anchor.

A point of pride in Park West, the memorial building in the 13 acre Veterans Memorial Park features a tower designed in the 1950s to give tourists a view of the former MGM studios back lot. Now a designated historic site that houses Culver City Parks and Recreation, the building is graced by an elaborate filmstrip sculpture.

Ranchers are prevalent along these cozy streetscapes, and you’ll notice homes are well-established and nicely renovated. Styles range from 1940s bungalows with original detailing, to smartly remodeled midcentury homes, to brick and stucco beauties nestled in next to large two-story Spanish-style homes.

Parents love that Farragut Elementary, Culver City Middle and Culver City High Schools are all gathered in one contiguous area, allowing all ages to mingle across the entire public campus. Public alternative schools are here as well, such as Culver City Unified School District iAcademy for independent study.

After school, kids can hit the Olympic-size Culver City Municipal Plunge, known as The Plunge, for lessons or competitive swim. They also often head to the small, open-turf Coombs Park to socialize and relax.

The southern sector of Park West along Sepulveda Avenue is dotted with cuisine options from Italian at Allegra California, to Mediterranean fare at Fresh Pita Organic Express, to Cuban at En Rincon Criollo. Culver City’s first Pho restaurant opened here in 2008, fittingly named Pho Show in honor of its movieland locale. A former watering hole for the Hollywood elite, Dear John’s, has been re-established here by renowned chefs and named one of L.A.’s hottest new restaurants.

But the can’t-miss is delightful Café Laurent. This authentic French eatery tantalizes with sweet and savory crepes on a secluded patio that’s joyfully decorated for every holiday.

Locals pick up artisan drinks at Tanner’s Coffee Co. and comic collectors love Park West’s Pulp Fiction shop. Residents and tourists also frequent The Wende Museum’s programs and exhibitions. For grocery essentials, Ralphs and Pavilions are nearby.

This friendly place also draws more than 25,000 visitors annually to Veterans Memorial Park for Fiesta La Ballona’s carnival rides, music, beer garden and petting zoo.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
