Walkability to Broad Cove Reserve and sought-after real estate in Cumberland Foreside
Throughout the 1800s, schooners and brigs were built along the shores of Cumberland Foreside, a community on Casco Bay once home to the Spears Shipyard. Today, that area is known as the Broad Cove Reserve, where locals can swim, kayak and fish. A hiking path dubbed Spears Hill Trail also surrounds the public beach. But the neighborhood is known for more than just its waterfront recreation, according to Mary Conroy, an associate broker with the Portside Real Estate Group, who has sold several homes in the area. “You turn onto one of those little waterside streets, and it’s just like, ‘Oh my gosh, these houses are phenomenal,’” she says. “You can walk to the beach and smell the ocean, but the really nice houses are just as much of a draw.” Locals will also find easy access to golf clubs, marinas and shopping in nearby Falmouth, as Interstate 295, Maine Route 88 and U.S. Route 1 all run through the neighborhood.

Coastal Maine architecture in Cumberland Foreside
While Cumberland Foreside’s inland cul-de-sacs have the occasional late 19th-century gambrel farmhouse, most dwellings weren’t built until the 1970s. Four-to-five-bedroom Colonial Revivals sit on 1-acre lots, often filled with periwinkle hydrangea bushes and eastern white pine and hemlock trees. Asphalt driveways lead to two-car garages alongside rambling Cape Cod cottages. Shingle-style houses may face the bay’s craggy shoreline, while contemporary-style dwellings sometimes back up to private beaches and wooden fishing piers. Inland homes can cost between $675,000 and $900,000, while properties closer to the water usually sell anywhere between $1 million and $5 million. Despite the neighborhood’s beach access, Conroy says mainly full-time residents live here. “There isn’t a renting market, and people will live here through the winter, so there’s really never tourists or any sort of busy season.”

Broad Cove Reserve is a quiet beach in Cumberland Foreside
A short walk down a steep boardwalk path leads to the Broad Cove Reserve shoreline, covered in broken seashells and driftwood. “Because Cumberland Foreside is primarily residential, the beach is incredibly quiet and almost never busy, even during the summer,” says Conroy. As beachgoers swim from May through June, they may see horseshoe crabs laying eggs. Kayak storage racks sit at the end of the wooden fishing pier, where anglers can catch striped bass and haddock. Locals must enter a lottery with the Cumberland Community Recreation Department to get a paddleboat storage spot at the beach. Spears Hill Trail is a mile-and-a-half-long and shaded by red pine and spruce trees. Hikers, snowshoers and bike riders will also pass fields of maidenhair ferns and wildflower patches with oxeye daisies and purple geraniums as they trek the dirt path.
