Dacula offers a pocket of peace halfway between Athens and Atlanta. The small city has a semirural feel with plenty of parks, yet the 7,000 residents here enjoy access to shopping and proximity to larger cities. “When I moved here 44 years ago, we didn’t even have a grocery store,” says Marcelle Smith, a Realtor with Peach State Realty. “It’s still a small community, but now we have like four shopping centers within a four-mile radius. We have a big Kroger store. There are a good many fast-food restaurants, but not a whole lot of fancy restaurants. We have a good many churches and everybody here is friendly.”
Dacula is significantly safer than most cities. According to the CAP Index Crime Score, its overall crime score is one out of 10. In comparison, the national average is four. “It’s quiet and peaceful,” Smith says. “There are four parks within four miles. I love to go to the parks and ride my bike.”
Dacula’s got curb appeal
Homebuyers will primarily find homes built from the 1970s to the present day. They come in a variety of styles, including ranch houses, split-levels and contemporary homes with two-car garages. Properties commonly rest along grid-patterned residential streets that end in cul-de-sacs. “We have lots of new construction going on for families. They’re building some really nice homes,” Smith says. “In the newer neighborhoods, the homes are fairly close together, but you can find homes on more than an acre with mature trees.”
Not all neighborhoods have sidewalk-lined streets, but the residential roads are usually quiet enough that locals feel comfortable walking for leisure. "You tend to see babies in strollers and dog walkers in the neighborhoods, but not so much on the main roads,” says Jan Welch, a real estate agent at Park Place Brokers who’s been selling homes in the area for nine years.
The average sales price hovers around $500,000. A cozy three-bedroom may cost around $325,000, while a five-bedroom, neo-traditional could fetch upwards of $700,000. "People come to Dacula for lower home prices and jobs, as they tend to commute to Atlanta or Athens easily from here,” Welch says.
Students attend well-ranked Gwinnett County Schools district schools
The Gwinnett County Schools district serves Dacula. Students may attend multiple schools including Dacula Elementary and Dacula Middle, both rated B-plus on Niche, and Dacula High School ranked B. Dacula High offers a dual enrollment program that allows students to earn college credit while still in high school.
Commuters can hop on the bus to get to downtown Atlanta
Residents have a 37-mile commute to downtown Atlanta by following Highway 316 West and Interstate 85 South. Xpress Georgia bus service offers transportation from Hebron Baptist Church on Hebron Church Road to downtown Atlanta Monday through Friday. Athens is 35 miles away via Route 29 North.
Dacula Road serves as a hub for shopping and dining
Dacula residents have access to plenty of nationally recognized chains. Along Dacula Road, locals can stock up on groceries at Publix or Kroger, pick up prescriptions at Walgreens or grab a bite to eat at Chick-fil-A. Further retail is a 9-mile drive northwest at the Mall of Georgia in Buford. This three-story mall is the largest in the state and features over two hundred stores, including Macy’s, Michael Kors and an Apple Store.
For dining out, Friends is a popular spot for burgers and wings. The eatery on Dacula Road also has arcade games to entertain the kids and multiple screens to catch the game. El Jinete, on Liam Avenue Northeast, is another local favorite for Mexican fare and margaritas.
Locals enjoy the outdoors at Dacula Park
Dacula Park on Dacula Road features tennis courts and an outdoor pool with its own swim team. Maple Creek Park, on McMillan Road, offers a playground and a nine-hole disc golf course. And Little Mulberry Park, a 6-mile drive north, has a lake for fishing and 5 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding.

The Dacula Memorial Day parade is an anticipated tradition
The Dacula Memorial Day Parade takes place in late May and draws more than 10,000 visitors. Featuring military vehicles, marching bands and classic cars, the parade along Dacula Road has been honoring America's military families for nearly 30 years. “It’s one of the biggest parades in Georgia,” Smith says. “It’s huge.”
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
